I have nothing against the kid. He seems like a nice young man. But, I am perplexed as to why anyone (many here) think that the GU game proved anything as it relates to the kid's ability.

He obviously has a decent shot, when left open with time to get it off.

He had 12 games to show that he could shoot under pressure and failed to do that. When garbage time hit (around the middle of the first half Saturday), he was put in, was defended loosely and he hit a few shots. It was basically a glorified practice session.

What, exactly, indicates that he should see more PT. It seems to me at this crisis timer in the program, you need to isolate the 8 or 9 guys that have a legitimate right to be in the rotation and let them get well defined roles and push them. To me, Max is really a specialist that should be used situational, not in any real major minutes.

I am serious and not trying to pick any fights.

Whether he merits PT or not...he was not left alone yesterday...they chased him all over the court...In fact, on one 3 pointer he actually created space and got his shot off (a make as well)

Max at least tries, comes to play and manages to get on the bus on time. Least of our problems, BE player or not.

Max is the only reliable offensive threat on this team and deserves PT. Period. IDK if you watched his minutes yesterday but he actually looked like a leader directing his teammates on how to run the offense. Sounds to me you have a pre-determined notion on this kid.

How can anyone judge this kid given the way he's coached? They've drawn up like 3 plays for him all season, and they expect him to freelance on the perimeter "creating" his own shot. He's the only consistent 3-point threat on the entire team.
And, what were you watching yesterday? Maybe one of his 3s he had a clean, open look. He was head and ball faking defenders up into the air and then nailing his shot.

I hate these threads, because every freakin team in the entire COUNTRY needs a guy who can shoot.let alone a "Big East" team. He's set up to fail here, how anyone who even casually follows this sport can't see that blows my mind.

No I don't. I just don't see anything here but a standstill shooter who needs to be wide open to get his shot off. Yes he did do a fake and side step to get one of his shots off yesterday, but GU's defense after the deluge was not that rigorous.

There is a place for guys like Max on teams (heck, we have not had a real legit outside shooter in years), but I think he is not a savior, and we have kids who, at least on paper, need to get straightened out for us to have any real possibility of success. I think Max being a major player here is a pipe dream. But, he does have a role to play in a properly balanced rotation.

Seems to me that he's the only one on this team that can actually shoot. The last time I checked the object of the game is to make shots.

It's up to the coaching staff to find ways to get him open looks. If you have a point guard like Rysheed who can penetrate at will, it really shouldn't be too hard. College hoops are full of guys who can't create their own shot but do just fine within the right system. If teams commit to stopping him it should open up someone else.

The bottom line is in the 2 games he actually got extended minutes (Penn St and yesterday) he was our best player. Why not give him a real chance to prove whether he can make a consistent impact? What do we have to lose at this point?

That's nice of you.

You do realize he is on a team filled with top 100 recruited players right? This is the kid who you take a shot at? Jesus Christ.

He's one freaking guy. He's a shooter. It's SUPPOSED to be his only role on the team, besides providing an honest job defending his position. I'll repeat: He does'nt get any plays run for him and he doesn't have anyone setting screens for him. There's 5 guys on the court, he's only one. With, what should be, a VERY defined role.

He's the only player on this team that can shoot...that alone should earn him substantial playing time. 'Critics' say he can't play D....well neither can the rest of the team.

Has any of our big east athletes ever set an outside screen. It would appear they are of the belief that want other teams do.

Hooper had a few pump fakes and side steps that led to him hitting shots in the game. He needs to be in as a role player with 10-15 mins every game. Teams play zone against us because they know we can't hit a 3 pointer and we are terrible at penetrating. Having him in there will open up the lane for people like Jordan and D'Lo as well as getting his own shots. Not to mention Hooper was the only player setting picks at the top of the key for our guards to get some movement and open shots against the zone. I think that the offensive advantage far outweighs the defensive disadvantage with him. Like mentioned before, it's not like we play good defense anyway.

No. Basically he just runs from baseline to baseline and from the end line up about halfway up the perimeter and then back. I feel bad for the guy.

He shouldn't be one of our best players, not even in Bizarro World. What he should be is a nice, complementary player who bangs in a couple of 3s a night, provides an honest effort on defense and...drumroll, please...have screens set for him and plays run for him where he can get into open spaces for good looks at the basket. He's nothing more, he's nothing less.

Yes, yes, yes.

Max Hooper is the type of guy who kills us on other teams every year. He'd be perfect on Wisconsin and we'd all be saying why don't we have a guy like that.

Get him some open shots and he is going to hit them. Doesn't need to play 30 minutes but when he is in the game it can stop the other team from packing it in down low because they have to put a man on him.

He should be on the floor when Jordan or Branch are on the floor not just because they possess the best ability to get him the ball but because it can create opportunities to drive to the basket with less traffic for those 2 who are our best penetrators

Branch has a history of ignoring the M & M boys when they're wide open to launch his own circus shots. They shouldn't be on the floor when he's there.

I've never coached, so I don't have the capacity to understand why we don't have our only true three point shooters on the floor when we're zoned. Why are our bricklayers who are among the worst in America given free reign to put up treys at will? I haven't given up on Lavin. I just can't figure out what he's thinking.

I just knew there would be a Max Hooper thread today. Yes, I was defending him as Otis ripped him before he hit his first shot. Then he hit a second, then a third. The tide shifted. Then Otis went away for a while.

Look, it was garbage time. garbage. It was a nice run. He has a nice shot. I'd like to see him hit a few 3's in a game when it matters. 15-20 minutes a game? That's crazy right now, until he hits the first couple of shots in a game that matters, when it matters.

Hooper isn't the problem. He also isn't the solution. He's an ingredient, if used properly, that can make a pretty nice red sauce, as Looie might say.

We all want to figure out what's wrong and how to fix it. I loved watching Hooper drain some threes. That's all.

Branch misses an average of less than 2 shots a game and he has a long history of ignoring the m&m boys for his own circus shots ?

I really don't understand the point of this thread. Max Hooper was brought here to play against zones by helping to open up driving opportunities for our shooting challenged players. If the shooting challenged players could play against a zone on their own, he would not see playing time. The last three games(Columbia, Xavier and Georgetown) they could not. The problem is they do not know how to play with Hooper in the game. If they did they would either get more open shots or Hooper would. This is a team game. Hooper is shooting 44% from three this year in a disjointed role. This surely shows that he can shoot when given a role. If he could shoot 40% when he is in the game, this would be the equivalent of Sampson shooting 60%. Good luck seeing that happen. I also agree that he understands how to play basketball and can be used to set picks as well.

GT's defense after the deluge is irrelevant...were they aware and focused on him? Yes. He created a shot or two and hit most of his shots...absolutely nothing negative to take away...in fact, given our desperate need for a shooter, any confidence he gets from yesterday is a positive
