I just love this!:

" Matt Abdelmassih ‎@mabde33
Recruiting period opens up today- a lot of time spent in cars, on planes, & in gyms seeing future Johnnies #sjubb"

He not only talks the talk, he walks the walk. We are going to loose out on kids, but I am convinced that as long as we have Matt on our staff, we will never loose out on a kid because someone else outworked us. You can't ask for much more of an effort from the staff.

Sense he could also go transfer route in Spring.

In addition to being a really nice guy, obviously both very talented and extremely hard with recruiting efforts. Traveling constantly can be exhausting, even when you don't have kids. IMO he will need some strong support to keep-up this pace in future years.

Matt is the best recruit Mullin has grabbed to date. And he has more than 4 years of eligibility. Really impressed by his commitment and work ethic. How old is Matt? :)

But it is a whole lot easier when you're not bogged down with Sunday matinees, yoga classes and diners at fancy Soho restaurants. ;)

When you think about the long-term health of the program, we need that young blood who is a recruiting gym rat – willing to spend as many hours in crappy little gyms as his key recruits are. Sounds like Matty may be that guy. Excited to see what he delivers in the next few years.

I try to restrain my enthusiasm until Matt's recruits perform as well as Harrison, Pointer, Harkless, Sampson, Greene, Obekpa and Jordan did at SJU. Certainly, SL didn't do enough to warrant retention, but there is no question he recruited some guys who could play at a high level. Recruiting is a lot like panning for gold or other precious metals - a lot of hard work only pays off when what you dredged up turns out to be something really valuable. A lot to be enthused about but until these guys pan out, I can't get overly excited.

Agree on the tempered enthusiasm regarding the results. My enthusiasm was directed at the effort. . We've both been around long enough to have seen lots of "flashes in pan". Or is it "flash in the pans". I worked in real estate sales for a lot of years and encountered plenty of guys who talked a good game, and even produced some results at times, but were always looking for short cuts and eventually fell by the wayside. The term "smoke and mirrors" comes to mind as it related to thier sporadic success. At the end of it all, there is no way you are going to have sustained success without hard work. It's to early to judge the staff on their on the court results. However it is not to early to judge them on their work ethic and their recruiting results. IMO they get an A+ for effort and an A for results.

Apples and Oranges. You are comparing a head coach to an assistant. You have to compare Lavin to ST Jean for it to be a fair comparison. ;)

ST Jean to Dunlap would also work

I stand corrected. In that case, getting bogged down with making sex tapes and diners at fancy Soho restaurants lol

Agree Beast. Its like the saleman who is constantly out there wheeling and dealing but can not close the big deal. We need for him to close on a top ten player. But hey, he is giving it his all and that usually gives way to success

That only applies if the salesman is only looking to close the "big deal", and comes up empty. We don't need for him to close on a top 10/one and done player as a measure of his success. The way he going about it is fine. The results will follow.

I think a top ten player is premature at this point. We need the guys who have been recruited to produce solid basketball on the court and reverse the slide to the bottom or last season. If these guys can approach .500 overall and maybe 7 wins in conference, they will show a marked improvement and maybe the program is on an upwards ascent that will attract top shelf talent here. No defaming Matt's apparent tenacity and effort. Just anxious to see these guys on the court.

I get the sarcasm (touche'!) but you're right about comparing apples and oranges. To compare the recruiting successes of Lavin, a well-known, high-profile head coach & nationally recognized sports TV personality, with those of Matt, a young, unheralded (even unheard of) assistant doesn't -- at least at this stage -- make sense.

Gotta mainly look at the rankings of the guys Matt is bringing in to see where we are headed. Zach Brown, is ranked 28th in the 17 class. Lovett, Ponds, Simon, Yakwe, Ahmed all rated highly. Abdelmassih is killing it and he's also a proud grad. Gotta love what he's doing and the direction we are headed.

Honestly I don't think it is fair to compare main recruiter to head coach but as a fan base we have to start to let go of our former coaches. No other fan base does this. I don't go on Met forums and bash Willie Randolph for not bunting in game 7 with 1st and 2nd and no one out in 06. I have enough to worry about with the current manager!
Lets just worry about the current coach and staff.

BTW Norm still stinks ;) ;)

Agree on moving on & hopefully there are no Mullin/Clyde Drexler comparisons in our future. Just kidding now!
