Maryville Saints - Exhibition matchup

Looks like their star from last year's team (19 points and 11 rebounds per game) graduated.

Hopefully this one goes as planned and it will make us all forget URI. This is one of those games where the talent gap should be blatantly obvious. Hope we don't give up tons of points to no name bigs and watch miracle 3 after miracle 3 go in. No excuses, we are a tourney team this year. Time to start looking like one.

To their credit last season Maryville defeated D1 Miami of Ohio.

I wonder why Maryville ?
Maryville University is located in a suburb of St.Louis. There are many- many D2 schools closer than Missouri that StJohn’s could have scheduled for an exhibition. My guess is that there is be a personal connection between Mullin, or a member of his staff with someone at Maryville. I doubt that Maryville was randomly selected by St. John’s to travel from St. Louie to play the exhibition game.

I will say this. If we lose this, you have a right to be concerned. Where a scrimmage is usually a glorified practice, exhibitions are usually taken more seriously.

St. Thomas Aquinas was only three years ago.

Has anyone seen whether Friday's exhibition is going to be broadcast online on ESPN3?

That is how it is listed on the official schedule. I checked on watchespn.com and did not see us on their schedule though.

Reading Redstorm89's email made me realize the exhibition game is Thursday, not Friday. Saved by redment.com!

I have to be honest. Since this game literally means nothing one way or the other. I am pretty sure we lost to the Harlem Globetrotters in an Exhibition, Marcus Hatten's Junior year. There is a small part of me that would like to see Maryville 86 ST John's 79.
I picture Mike Zaun sitting in a rocker listening to REM's "It's the end of the world" on a constant loop.

Interesting, because I picture you in a room engulfed in flames with no doors or windows screaming "EVERYTHING'S FINE!". Is it fine? Or is it you trying to pretend it is to make it easier to cope with? Either way it wouldn't change the reality. No St. John's basketball is not as serious as a fire and I don't make it out to be. But if we lose against this team and you are still yawning then nothing will wake you up. Turning away from problems don't solve problems. Problems get solved by admitting to problems and addressing them head-on.

If we lose more than one or two games before BE I will be concerned.
So far this off season we have gotten a really good player who was then ruled eligible despite the fact that in the past he would certainly not have been.
We also have our best returning player coming back, a guy who was recently voted Pre- season BE player of the year.
On top of that we also return our 2nd and third best players from last season to add to what appears to be 3 solid newcomers not including the aforementioned Heron who was what a top 30 HS recruit?
I get we have sucked. But again since Louie left we have basically sucked 4 out of every 5 years.

If you are not going to be optimistic heading into this season, you never will be. I understand frustration. I am a Met, Knick and ST John's fan. But if you are going to start bitching before what should be a successful season what is the point? Maybe root for someone else.

People might be nervous with our HS recruiting etc and even with the staff as far as coaching but if you look at this team on paper and you aren’t as optimistic about this season then I don’t know when you could ever be optimistic. This is the year we wreck people like Lavins first year but this team has way more talent and we are older than most of not all teams in the conference. i gotta believe age wise we are one of the oldest teams in the conference. I could very well end up being wrong but this particular season Is the season that we can really break through so enjoy the ride

And if we are wrong and we are not good, bitch away! Just don't understand preemptive bitching. Things are rarely good around here. This year should be!

Agree, we'll be good, probably very good, and hopefully exceed the expectations of most pundits, and that we should "enjoy the ride".
At the same time, legitimate questions exist regarding Staff Structure and our lack of success in recruiting even solid HS talent--that need to be addressed for the longer term relevancy of the program.
Now, hopefully, our great-season-to-be functions as that 2nd full-time recruiter we presently do not have and succeeds in getting some key guys--like Kofi and Precious--to commit.
That'd be nice 'n spiffy--but still...

Exactly and the time to start bitching about results is November 6th when we open our regular season. We won't lose to Maryville, but pointless to worry about winning point differential in an exhibition as staff may use this game to experiment with various things, including perhaps giving some time to Roberts & Earlington.
