Marcus Hatten

I might call St. John's anyway - I'm adept at connecting with someone & throw in my two cents ( wonder where that expression came from?)
Maybe something will be done ( on earth as it is...oh well)
Don't know where it game from but when it started 2 cents may have been worth a lot making the expression now have the opposite meaning of which it was intended. Maybe we should be saying let me throw my million bucks in. :)

According to Merriam Webster, it's from the 1930s (though probably was in use prior to being officially "recognized"), when two cents, even back then, couldn't buy you much. It's meant to convey a lack of arrogance or contention when disagreeing with something being said. Similar to saying "For what it's worth" (not much), and then giving one's "humble" opinion.

I have no problem with them not acknowledging Hatten. He was a great player for us. Let's just leave it at that. While we can't forget the past, we must also not dwell on it.

If we acknowledge Hatten, wouldn't we also have to acknowledge every former player that attends every game?

Hatten is not just some random former player. In his two seasons with the team, he was a very prolific scorer (maybe someone can pull up where his PPG rank all time on our lists), lead the team to the NCAA tournament and NIT Title (now removed), and was a great representation of the school by all accounts.

Arguably the 2nd greatest 2 year player the school has ever seen.

Walter or Artest #1?

Hatten has the record for Points per game average in Big East games only.

I think when Moose said "two year player" he meant two years of eligibility, not played two years and left.

On the minus side he saved Jarvis' job by winning the NIT on his own his last year and we all know what keeping Jarvis around for 6 more games did for the program.

Since Berry and Artest both left with eligibility remaining, who's number 1?

Hatten also has the two highest totals for steals in a season.

Sure; why not put them on the screen with a "welcome back______"?

Is it that hard? It takes what 10-15 seconds?
They usually do it during time outs so it actually wouldn't take any time at all.

Not sure who Moose's #1 is, but certainly Boo, Bootsy and Hardy(for senior year alone) have to be right up there. I'm probably forgetting some older guys. Was The Whooper a 2 year guy?

With the freshman ineligibility rule, and returning servicemen after WWII and Korea, we had to have had some pretty good 2 year players. Was Billly Goodwin here for two years? For me, he is way up on the list.

Loved Billy! One of my all-time favs. Pretty sure he was 3 years.

As did Kevin Loughery.

In researching the school records for steals (to project how close Sir Dom will rise on the list) I was amazed by Hatten's steal numbers. This guy had a 10 steal game and had over 100 steals in both seasons. By the way...the all time record of 238 is held by Sealy with Hatten giving it a run in just two seasons. He is by far the best ball stealer this school as had along with Barkley, Sealy and Mullin a level below. I'm sure the stats were not kept in the earlier days. Even if they were, no one could have put up the numbers that Marcus achieved.

Dom and Harrison have a good chance to land in the top of the list.

You are correct, a 3 year player, by way of San Jacinto JC. I think if he had him at small forward in 85, might have been a different story. He was THAT rock solid as a contributor and would not have feared Gtown one bit.

Agreed that if you replaced Glass with Goodwin everything changes. Think people overstate Willie's talents. He had great athletic ability but was no more than an OK college player. Billy OTOH was a gamer, a fierce competitor who could do a little bit of everything. Very similar game to Postell IMO.

I didn't realize Berry had a 3rd year left. Was pretty much saying JUCO and putting him behind Berry

Berry's case was an unusual one. If I remember correctly, he attended St. John's right out of high school, but had to sit out his first year for academic reasons, expecting to be eligible as a soph. However, at the end of that year, there was a complicated ruling by the NCAA that he was still ineligible, but he could be eligible for Division 1 play if he went the JUCO route for one year ... which is what he did. What I do remember -- this time very clearly -- was being in a friend's office at CBS Sports following the 1985-86 season, when Bill Raftery, knowing my friend was a St. John's fan, came rushing into the room and excitedly said, "Did you hear? Walter Berry's going pro!" It was like a kick to the stomach.
