Map of NYC hoops...

Stephon Marbury or Mark Jackson. Better High school player?

Marbury was the 2nd best NYC player of the last 25 years sandwiched between Kenny Anderson (#1) and Felipe Lopez (#3) on Main Man's official list of the greatest NYC hoopsters Main Man ever saw.

I put Lamar Odom right there too, although he didnt finish his senior year at CTK.

His performance in the '95 City Title game as a soph is the best ever....35 points (19 in the third q.) vs St. Rays.

I would also agree that Felipe and Marbury are at the top of the list - i am too young to remember Anderson, but from all accounts he was an all time great.

No mention of St Francis Prep?

Mike Cavataio

Another Norm Roberts "diamond in the rough"

Was he city POY?

Had completely forgotten about him. Whatever happened to him?

Another underskilled player that Norm fell in love with. He loved to put these "not good enough to play in the BE" and try to prove that these guys belonged, but if you paid a shrink it was Norm's way of saying that "I coulda been a contender" instead a D2 star at Queens College, if they even were D2 at the time, which I do not believe is true.

No mention of St Francis Prep?

I actually thought of my old friend Steve Shurina. I played against Steve (at SFP) when I played for Molloy in the 80's. Hung out with him at SJU. Really good guy. Not a great player but hey he got a ride and one of the best seats to watch the Redmen right next to Looie for the most part.

Seats? He took PT away from highly recruited Elander Lewis and Marcus Broadnax. Never got Looie's preference for him. (In fact, it pissed me off.)

For the "older" posters:

Wasn't Kenny Smith also a great player out of Molloy?

Mashburn at Hayes?

Kenny Smith played at Molloy. He was one of three points guards out of the city that year considered blue chip recruits, Pearl Washington and Mark JAckson considered the others. Jackson was considered a distant third to Washington (Syracuse) and Smith (UNC).

Mash was great at Hayes, but considering what he afterwards at Kentucky and in the NBA, he has to be considered one of the best player NYC has produced in the past 25 yrs.

Kemba Walker is now in that discussion.

I also remember Mel "Killer" Davis & Billy Schaeffer as 2 strong NYers that played for SJU. All American honors at some level.

Also missing: Ivan Kovack and Kenny McIntyre from Bayside HS and important players at SJU, and Bobby McIntyre who was a standout from Holy Cross HS and SJU.

I think it warrants discussion as to how there has been a decline in the abundance of incredible talent coming out of NYC. Is it that everyone has caught up, or that there is something else? Certainly the radical decline of schoolyard basketball could be a factor. A lot of stars from the past grew up on playgrounds where if you didn't win, you sat. Schoolyard games could become wars, where lesser skilled players would give 150% to stay on the court and wouldn't yield an inch to better players. Sadly those days are gone.
