Malik Sealy To Be Inducted to SJU Hall of Fame

I'm all confused.
His number is retired and has been for quite some time.
Yet now he's inducted into Hall of Fame?

My avatar should tell you how I feel about Malik. Not only one of the greats on the court, but a true gentleman off the court. I shed quite a few tears the day I heard the bad news. He was taken way too soon.

He's not the only one who has a retired # but is not in the HOF.

It all seems repetitive to me, no? If your number is retired l would think you would make the SJU HOF

Chris is not in the HOF. University has tried to work with his schedule but have not been able to come up with a mutually convenient date.

I guess its something that is also more of a recent program, this HOF that is. Correct?

The number retiring was a 1 year thing with 10 people and then nothing since.

Same sentiments, including the avatar! My all time favorite Redmen who gave me many great memories growing up

Very well deserved and about time

Malik Sealy is one of our legends and will be for the ages. A truly gifted SF who could do it all on the Court, He had athletic hops but, also all the other tools a player can have.

He could drill it from the corner or take it to the rim with grace and skill. I believe he made several All American teams his senior year and was a firsr round NBA PICK.

From Tolentine HS in the Bronx. Now closed.

With no disrespect at all, since everyone always what a great guy Malik was, can someone here enumerate any off the court accomplishments, charitable or humanitarian efforts, volunteerism, etc. I'm thinking that the SJU HOF may go beyond sports achievements? Can anyone pitch in here?

On another note, it may seem frivolous, but those cheesy banner on either side of the scoreboard don't make it clear to me that those numbers are indeed retired. Why don't we hang banners with numbers retired from the ceiling like other sports venues, like MSG. I'm guessing there may be a problem with the height of the ceiling, but in basketball I always associated a retired number with the number being hoisted to the rafters in a ceremony. The cheesy banners seem to magically appear one year without much fanfare.

About time, indeed!

Because the heat and humidity of Carnesseca Arena would cause them to decay within weeks of being up there

Not to mention that by now there should be about 10 more well-deserved retired jerseys. Why does the university choose to hide our history rather than celebrate it?

Yes, I, for one don't understand the lack of recognition of George Johnson's accomplishments. Great player at SJ...Probably best rebounder and best post game of any Johnnie since 1974. Will never forget him easting Kent Benson up in MSG and being acknowledged by Benson as the quickest big man he had faced.
