Lovett

Here's a comparison: Marcus Lovett and Jameer Nelson. They are both six feet flat. Nelson is stockier (even as a college player), but their ball handling, passing and shooting ability are comparable.

Best thing about this comparison.....even after being name National Freshman Player of the Year, Nelson stayed at St. Joe's all four years. To date, he has made over $60 million in the NBA.

He has been out of control and in foul trouble every game. Needs to help out Lovett and Ponds and more importantly be a stabilizing force. Plays out of control. Besides the fouls, which are all well deserved, he barks at officials and other team. Prediction he gets team into a fight this year and no one wants that as I think the girls team might be able to take us..

Don't disagree re his attitude but it might be asking a lot for a first year JUCO to be the emotional glue - he doesn't know what it takes to be a college basketball player any more than the freshmen do. That's why god created upperclassmen - just another reason why Chris Jones would be a welcome addition to this team.

Mullin isn't helping BA by constantly whining to the refs. I remember him being chirpy as a player and I understand he's frustrated but he goes at them non stop. Learning to take a beating like a man is an important lesson that doesn't get taught by blaming other people.

Way too early for this, but for sh*ts and giggles:
For those of you taking shots at LoVett, 6 games into his career:
Here is a comparison of him vs. similarly diminutively sized Kemba Walker (now scoring 24 pts per game in the NBA):

Per game stats:
LoVett: Through only 6 games:
FG%: 44%, 3pt FG%: 41%; FT%: 78%; Points scored 19.8; Assists: 4.0 Steals: 0.8

Kemba Walker: Freshman year, Sophomore year, Junior Year (then NBA after that):
FG%: 47%, 3pt FG%: 27%; FT%: 72%; Points scored 8.9; Assists: 2.9 Steals: 1.1
FG%: 40%, 3pt FG%: 33%; FT%: 77%; Points scored 14.6; Assists: 5.1 Steals: 2.1
FG%: 43%, 3pt FG%: 33%; FT%: 82%; Points scored 23.5; Assists: 4.5 Steals: 1.9

LoVett is awesome. Don't know if he is as quick as Walker, and I don't know if he'll even get a sniff of the NBA, but it's going to be fun watching him for the next few years.

I think we should just all sit back and enjoy Lovett and Ponds for the one year we have them.

I believe Richie will be one of our best players over time....so why not get him started right away.

I agree on Lovett and Ponds but dont think its fair to them to put Freudenberg and Mussini in same context.

Freudenberg has not shown anything yet at this level to be able to say he has " high basketball IQ" which is more of a BS term IMO.

Mussini can shoot when open and attempts to drive at times...other than that he's a liability like most others.

I do believe L and P could start as a pair on any other BE team. "Real deal" meaning they see the floor (even where others are not looking), can make shots (when not forced based on the inability of others) , can handle the ball and know what to do with it, have good hands (and eyes and feet). A lot of work to be done? Of course, but these kids know how to play the game.

Lovett and Ponds are both the real deal......

Please define "real deal".

IMO both have the potential to be very good players but neither are very good players at this point in their careers.

Here is a question: based upon present performances do you believe that Lovett and Ponds could start as a pair on many of the Big East teams?

Mullin's "attitude" on the bench has been unrefined and every time I see St. Jean drawing up plays for in game adjustments it makes your favorite coach Steve Lavin look like a fcking genius.
You are right in that he spends an inordinate amount of the one minute time out angry at the officials when he should be the main man in the huddle. Mullin would have done himself and the team a favor by hiring Mike Rice.
Rice could have shared with our basketball head coach his experience in the John Lucss anger management camp and provided some basic X&O on the sidelines. Not allowing Zendon back was another head scratcher. Our interior is thin but now it looks like Matt Abdelmassah is training them. Every team with a big man taller than 6'7 has schooled Sima, Yakwe and Owens. At this point Mullin may as well start your favorite player Amar Alibegovic up front. ;)

Understood. But he is a freshman, playing in a new country, and thru 6 games. Playing time will help him develop. And he has the skills. I disagree that he is the 2016 version of Hooper (as a fellow poster had said earlier).

Ponds and Lovett need to play in tandem but so far they have played reasonably well individually. There is still a lot of room for improvement as they have each only played in four competitive games this year and still have more than twenty to go this season. In order for them to get much better, the rest of the team needs to get better and that is a bigger challenge. We were supposed to be deep this year but so far I see it like this through four games.

Lovett A-
Ponds B+
Ahmed B-
Yawke C+
Mussini C+
Sima C
Owens C-
Ellison D-
Amar D-
Freudenberg F
Williams F[/quot

Ahmed (C) Sima (D) And Yakwe (D) scored too high. Owens (B-) and Mussini (B) to low.

That's a combination of his agent's smarts, and SJU's stupidity ;)

This fan base particularly these boards seems to enjoy bashing its best player. Some are starting to bitch about shots and over dribbling. I see it differently. I see a guy that is in a bad position of being the point guard but also far and away the most talented offensive player on the team. He has no one he can get the ball down low who can get an easy basket. Ponds is a good player but he is more of a guy who creates his own shot rather than a catch shoot player. Ahmed is that type of guy as well. Not sure where assists come from on this team. With all his shooting I think he is still shooting over 47%. Which is actually great.
You can see Lovett getting frustrated but he has to shoot to keep us close. Really other than Ponds and Mussini wide open with feet set I don't expect any other guy to make a shot. I am actually surprised when they go in.
You really can't judge Lovett until we get better offensive players in here. And if Lovett wasn't here we would be worst team in the country.

Yeah, like any new kid, he has a few areas to improve on. However, in my opinion, he is obviously the best player we have & frankly I hope he does not get too frustrated carrying such a huge burden on a very inferior offensive team to date. It must also be trying for him to have interior guys with hands of stone. I don't blame him for taking option B in that equation and shooting, driving himself. It was said early on that our bigs would prosper from his penetration & passes. True, but catch the ball first please.

The bold a key, and add Ponds to that. Hopefully Simon and Clark aren't purely scout team in practice so these two get the feel for having layups/dunks converted as well as potential for more general support next year. :)

On serious note re: your point, felt we were a year early playing this kind of schedule, not just in terms of results but perhaps more importantly team and player development. Understand reasons why we do it (Maui, Bahamas, etc. and games against premium national OOC comp impacts recruiting), but flip side is biting off more than you can chew and now having to manage that early in the season. Because what really was a pretty good effort in 3 consecutive difficult games against tournament type teams is now mostly overwhelmed by 4 consecutive losses, punctuated by what was our first really poor effort in our 3rd game in 3 days, which our freshman just weren't ready for.

Not apologizing (especially for ODU), but you can imagine how the results may have been different if Minny were on a neutral court or at home, and VCU/ODU were legs 1 and 2 and not 2 and 3 of a tournament. Purely hypothetical, but that's probably more the level we are ready for at this stage.

Mentioned before the tournament was worried about compounding effect of potential for 3-4 losses in a row, especially when most players have very little experience losing, and was hoping to see a team in Game 3 playing with the same energy and swagger they did in first road game in Minny. That didn't happen so now we have to manage the downside risk of this type of schedule that has come to fruition.

Lovett and Ponds seem solid in this respect but have to absolutely ensure the losing doesn't have short or long term impact on their morale. Also think Ahmed - who while erratic is off to a much better start than he's generally getting credit for, especially given the alternatives - and Yawke - who while off to a slow start is our best chance at a big this year who most fits this team's style - could use confidence reinforcement as to how much we need them.

Hoping for easy feel good win tomorrow because @Tulane is likely a challenging game given that pretty much all they've done this year is put up respectable efforts against power conference teams. That one and PSU, in addition to holding serve in games we should, now critical if the final OOC result is going to being credible.
