This fan base particularly these boards seems to enjoy bashing its best player. Some are starting to bitch about shots and over dribbling. I see it differently. I see a guy that is in a bad position of being the point guard but also far and away the most talented offensive player on the team. He has no one he can get the ball down low who can get an easy basket. Ponds is a good player but he is more of a guy who creates his own shot rather than a catch shoot player. Ahmed is that type of guy as well. Not sure where assists come from on this team. With all his shooting I think he is still shooting over 47%. Which is actually great.
You can see Lovett getting frustrated but he has to shoot to keep us close. Really other than Ponds and Mussini wide open with feet set I don't expect any other guy to make a shot. I am actually surprised when they go in.
You really can't judge Lovett until we get better offensive players in here. And if Lovett wasn't here we would be worst team in the country.

He's the point guard and to have the ball in his hands as much as it is he needs to have more than 1 assist. The offense looks horrible and will continue if he has a shoot first mentality. It's becoming contagious. Amed, Mussini and Ellison all looking to shoot once the ball happens to get to them. I do think Lovett will be a great player for us once he learns to get everyone involved more. In the meantime let Ponds run the point.

Teams will be double teaming him all year. He should play off the ball some. (Ponds & Mussini are capable ball handlers). When he does he should be looking too kick it out someone is open cause of the double team.

If I never see Ellison dribble again I would be good with that.

Ponds and Lovett need to play in tandem but so far they have played reasonably well individually. There is still a lot of room for improvement as they have each only played in four competitive games this year and still have more than twenty to go this season. In order for them to get much better, the rest of the team needs to get better and that is a bigger challenge. We were supposed to be deep this year but so far I see it like this through four games.

Lovett A-
Ponds B+
Ahmed B-
Yawke C+
Mussini C+
Sima C
Owens C-
Ellison D-
Amar D-
Freudenberg F
Williams F

Yeah, like any new kid, he has a few areas to improve on. However, in my opinion, he is obviously the best player we have & frankly I hope he does not get too frustrated carrying such a huge burden on a very inferior offensive team to date. It must also be trying for him to have interior guys with hands of stone. I don't blame him for taking option B in that equation and shooting, driving himself. It was said early on that our bigs would prosper from his penetration & passes. True, but catch the ball first please.

Yep. +1

Are you guys sure Lovett is our best player? I really think Ponds is a little better than Lovett.

As much as I like Ponds, I give edge to LoVett, especially in light of fact he is our only true PG. The real point is, for two new guys to college ball, they evidence a lot of talent. Unfortunately that talented tandem is burdened with a team w/o any complementary scorers to date. I am confused by Ahmed, having seen him before he came here & thinking he would be a plus early on. Obviously he still can find his groove, but perhaps I minimized the Juco level transition challenge year one.

I think Lovett is the only player with the ability to get us back into games singlehandedly but Ponds is a very close 2nd. Just my opinion

Lovett and Ponds are both the real deal. Can score and have high b'ball IQ. 1 and 2, or 2 and 1...doesn't matter. Mussini has both as well, but just not as athletic. After that, not so much (so far). I really would like to see Richie get some more quality PT, because from the little we've seen, he will be able to score and also has high b'ball IQ. Get him in there.

I agree on Lovett and Ponds but dont think its fair to them to put Freudenberg and Mussini in same context.

Freudenberg has not shown anything yet at this level to be able to say he has " high basketball IQ" which is more of a BS term IMO.

Mussini can shoot when open and attempts to drive at times...other than that he's a liability like most others.

Lovett and Ponds are both the real deal......

Please define "real deal".

IMO both have the potential to be very good players but neither are very good players at this point in their careers.

Here is a question: based upon present performances do you believe that Lovett and Ponds could start as a pair on many of the Big East teams?

I agree. Freud looked great in the exhibition. Maybe he's like Hooper, can make shots w/o being guarded. But in real games so far this year, he can't defend , nor shoot. Maybe he still has the jitters, maybe w some weight and exp things will change. Lovett is going to be double teamed so he must look to pass. Team plays helter shelter BB. I was disappointed last night. I don't know if it's coaching, talent or exp, but it looks like another long year. Let's keep our fingers crossed w Zack. If he qualifies and w Simon and Clark ,we will have talent and then Mullin can really be evaluated. Unfortunately Sima and Yakwe don't look much better than last year except free throws. Ellison is disappointing. Amars insistence on being a SF has landed him more time on the bench. Williams can't be on the court for 30 sec w/o fouling. Will have to look for Mussini more to loosen up the D to give Ponds and Lovett breathing room.

I like Ponds too. The point was those two are clearly better than anyone else on the team. Ahmed has ability but has been the 2nd biggest disappointment. Sima has played a little better but there is a def ceiling on how good he can be. Yakwe has been terrible. The other players aren't worth mentioning really.

OTIS, with all due respect, that is an unfair question. No other Big East teams have Mussini and Ellison as the other options. Both ARE very good players already but lack college experience. Both are being asked to carry the load on an offensively challenged team. And, more importantly, both play on a team with the thinnest and least talented front line in the Big East. It is extremely hard to design offensive plays when you start both Yakwe and Sima as neither can finish around the rim. It is even harder when Bashir Ahmed appears to be playing to get his points rather than play in a team first mentality. If, the three guys starting with them start to rebound and score, then their jobs will be easier. As I said early on, if Ponds and Lovett have off games, some here are going to be in for a disappointing season. To me, this is all the effect of desperation recruiting on the part of the staff. They were willing to sacrifice a season with the likes of Mouvlika, Durand Johnson, Tarik Owens, Sima and Mussini who were not in very high demand. Darien Williams was a total bust. Even the 2017 class was a push where the staff had to settle for two transfers unhappy with playing time and a talented but troubled big man. That trend has to stop with the 2018 class. Right now Ponds and Lovett are best we have and we should be grateful to have them and especially to start on this very unbalanced team. Without these two this year the results would be disastrous and Mullin would be putting his house up for sale. Oh, wait, forget the house part!

Ahmed has ability but has been the 2nd biggest disappointment. ... Yakwe has been terrible. The other players aren't worth mentioning really.

10 points / 5 rebounds / 36 percent from three a game is a disappointment? Brownlee averaged 12 and 5 as a senior in 10 more minutes a game. James Scott averaged 11 and 4. What were you expecting? He's certainly shall we say rough around the edges and has enormous room for improvement but disappointment is I think a bit of a stretch. Yawke has not shown the offensive move forward you'd have hoped but he's averaging 4 and 4 and is 13th in the country in blocks. That's not terrible for a sophomore who should be a freshman. Mussini, Ellison and Owens are terrible and are killing us. The jury is out on the German. The rest of them should be shipped to the glue factory.

Ahmed is the key. He has ability but is out of control. I think he will figure it out but might not happen until next year. At this point he has been a disappointment and he can play better. I liked James Scott and situation is similar.
Yakwe probably victim of unrealistic expectations, but I do feel he has regressed. Yakwe had to be better than last year and Ahmed had to be better than he has for us to be ok. They have not and we are not.

Could not agree more. Would love Ahmed to be a 12 and 5 guy this year, but he may just get there. Each game he shows improvement. To say he is a disappointment after 6 division 1 games is ridiculous, but not surprising from our so called fan base. Would have liked to see a little more from Yakwe so far but not shocked and no reason to be down on him except if you believed the hype that some spouted when he was compared with David Russell who was a MCAA and Big East Freshman of the year.
Sima , the one returning starter, who was called the worlds worst free throw shooter last season has shown improvement.

Not the stats. They about what I expected. He has been out of control and in foul trouble every game. Needs to help out Lovett and Ponds and more importantly be a stabilizing force. Plays out of control. Besides the fouls, which are all well deserved, he barks at officials and other team. Prediction he gets team into a fight this year and no one wants that as I think the girls team might be able to take us.
Don't lump me in with our fans. After 6 games he has been less than what he can be which equals disappointment to this point.
