Live and Die by the Three!

As I was watching the Knicks and Celtics game last night, how many threes is enough before you start attacking the basket! I know the Celtics hoist a ton of threes and the Knicks did a great job defending.

As for SJU, we brought in a lot of shooters and Pitino revolutionized the three point shot as part of the game. What are your thoughts on the type of team we’ll be. Considering that everyone, including Zuby has the green light to shoot the three. My hope is that he institutes a dribble drive and kick out for a three if needed offense. Similar to the Calipari dribble drive offense. Will be interesting to see!

Zuby will benefit immensely by having shooters surround him. Often he was doubled down low and interior drives were challenged by paint clogging D. I believe he will feast with post ups, kick outs and re-posting. I am less interested in how well he shoots threes than his physical play down low w offensive rebounding and posting guys up.

Imo, the one area critical for Zuby to improve on is defensive rebounding triggering outlet passes like Wes Unseld did back in the day, leading to easy buckets from the cadre of athletes we have brought in.

Agree and Hopkins should be a big help on defensive boards as well.

Agreed. Zubys play down low and his mid-range game should be his main focus this year that will translate to the next level. His success down low will open as you mentioned kicking the ball out for more selected three point shots. I foresee better ball movement and dribble penetration rather than the weaving at the top of the key.

Odds on the first poster to complain about Zuby’s imminent drop in offensive rebounding? Remember, it’s ok for the first shot to go in too 😆

The problem is that he will need to show development in shooting from range for his NBA prospects. It's hard to navigate the difference between what the NBA is looking for and what contributes to winning on the college level sometimes, especially for bigs. Hopefully Rick will find the balance for Zuby between helping his NBA profile and winning games - maybe some hi-lo action with him and Mitchell or Hopkins will be the answer.

Fair point on balanced approach.

I’m old school, I never liked what the three point shot brought to the game. As the three point shot evolved, the post game disappeared as did the mid range game to some extent. I miss the 69-70 Knicks with their passing, team work and Reeds post play.

In terms of the Johnnie’s, if coach can combine a strong defensive team with three point play, and with this group of heralded shooters, the team could be special and their D will cover up for a poor shooting night.

I’m old school as well. I believe it diminished ball movement and driving to the basket and running set plays. Easier to sit back and shoot the three. Also allows a team to get back into a game rather than buckle down and play defense to stop the other team. I’m saying this changed the game to a certain extent but we have to adapt to the changes as they come (I.e. NIL).
