LIU - Goodbye to Blackbirds

A blackbird is a real thing, and the mascot pics that I saw didn't seem racist, so I'm not sure what the issue is for people against it.

As the song said Bye, Bye Blackbirds.

I remember we lost to LIU at Alumni Hall. Richie Parker who had been accused of sexual assault or something like that beat us. Ugh.

Political Correctness is killing us, one day at a time...

Come on people! The black in blackbirds has to be racist no? Next the Crimson Tide will have to drop the crimson part so as not to offend crimson people.

I think Duke should change their mascot, the devil in Blue Devils could mean they are heavily into the satanic and thus could be offensive!

It was more than just accused.

It’s a red herring. They are changing the name because they are combining their two programs into one and want a rebranding and fresh start. LIU Post (previously CW Post) as the pioneers has had some successful programs while LIU Brooklyn (preciously just LIU) as the Blackbirds has its own traditions. Instead of choosing one they decided to piss off alumni from both with the rebranding. If it was just racial objections, it would have been the first thing mentioned not just a throwaway line and they could have went with the Pioneers.

While “Political Correctness” can go overboard, it has removed some words and things that were definitely derogatory and demeaning.

This stuff makes a mockery of real racism. What a stupid world we're living in. People are literally inventing fake issues just so they can "solve" them and then pat themselves on the back. 2019 is an odd time.

Thank you for actually reading (and comprehending) the article.

While they said it's a combination of merging plus PC culture, the fact that this is seen as offensive by anyone is just ridiculous. We must come out against asinine accusations, otherwise there's no limit anymore. There has to be that point where we admit things have gone too far, or you've opened Pandora's box. If you allow these ridiculous PC standards to be set without contesting them, you may very well be the next victim of it even with the best intentions. That's what those who virtue signal don't seem to understand...they think they will be spared because of it, but they then become the next on the chopping block. Pretty soon there will be "thought crimes" and you won't even need proof.

Yeah I just don't remember the details. Not a high point for LIU basketball.

Agreed, also heard the estate of Arthur Laurents is considering a lawsuit.

I'm offended as someone who identifies as a great white shark. This suggests that we are more aggressive and violent which is not the case at all. If this response offends anyone then I will no longer identify as a shark and will go back to being human because I'm fluid.
