I think it's pretty damning to Howland for sure. It seems like the kind of stuff ucla fans were looking for to get Howland out of there, but the grass isn't always greener. I can't see them keeping him around much longer. Kinda crazy when you contrast Howland's relationship to his players vs Lavin though, who they canned after one losing season. Lavin still great friends with droves of players that he coached, and is still hiring former players, havin them on campus all the time, and meeting with former players for dinner when on recriting trips. Makes one appreciate the qualities of the guy that we hired in contrast.
Coaches have different roles on a staff. Somebody has to be the bad cop. I doubt Howland has the personality to pull off the cool coach role. That role is easily filled by a younger assistant not too far removed from the game.
Understoodd, but Howland comes across as neither good cop nor bad cop. Comes across as socially awkward at times, uncaring, uneven with the treatment of different players. No doubt Howland is a good coach. He's a very good coach. I'm just saying this is certainly more damning for Howland as well as UCLA's recruiting efforts under Howland then many might think.
I agree...if this was 20 years ago you never would have heard about this or it would have been shrugged off. The media frenzy surrounding college athletics allows for the potential for any speck of bird crap to be consequently turned into a county sized pile of pig manure. I have seen rough practices so there is a huge part of me that could care less about most of that - the stepping on the chest was a bit extreme. Its some of the other control issues that lead to badness - hearing about things like special "rides" and "visits" would make any AD or fan of a big time program cringe just a bit
