None of this is limited to UCLA. This stuff goes on everywhere. Freshmen drinking alcohol and smoking pot? WOW. Getting into fights in practice? It's a physical game. This isn't an expose.

I do not believe the article is as damming as the build up lead me to believe.

That having been said I doubt that Howland is the UCLA coach for many more years.

Reeves Nelson getting away with what he did is out of the norm.

Howland let this guy bully other players and wreck the program, the other stories were more kids being kids, but Nelson is a "****" he needed to be dealt with earlier on and not given special treatment.

like others have said the article is not too damning although it really shows how big a d bag reeves nelson was. i kinda figured out the way he looked when st. john's played ucla last year.

Definitely Damming.....The article shows that Howland is not a leader nor mentor, which is what a college coach should be.

It states that he is the last to arrive at practice and the first to leave. He does not hold star players accountable, i.e.( Nelson's behavior and Josh Smith's weight). He allows lesser players on the team get abused and even his assistant coaches, (R U KIDDING ME).

He is aware of many of the problems but is scared to address or confront the situation, such as on New Year's Eve when he knew they hired a party bus but instead of addressing the situation he cowardly directed the team managers to institute a bed check for that night.

Howland seems to be only concerned with W's for his job security at any cost.

If my son was a being recruited to UCLA I would tell him not to go because I don't think Howland is fair, disciplined and be capable of being the leader of young men.

(STOMPING ON WOODEN'S GREAT GRANDSON)!!???!?!?! :furious:

This story is weak. Lack of discipline? Players partying? Favorable treatment?

You want a scandal UCLA? Come back to me when half your team is a hair away from being charged with rape, and then we have something to talk about.

I don't think it damning but it is damaging and I think it will depend on how much of a stink the LA tabloids make of it.. UCLA has a reputation and it let Lavin just not winning...I have read nothing close to this problem inregards to Lavin's leaving LA. I do know that if Jarvis had had an article like this written up it would have caused this board to erupt. Knowing what happened to storied programs like ours when Jarvis's lack of control finally climaxed in Pitt, it has to put a huge ? in the minds of UCLA fans. I am not saying Howland would be fired but the idea that I am getting from some people of "so what" is way off base. It is a big what because lack of control over a program has led to the downfall of some great coaches (Tressel) and us (Jarvis).

LOL

I really thought there was something to this. This sounds like a biased fan getting one side of the story from pissed off transfers and a fired manager.

Show me a season where kids don't go at it in practice and I'll tell you those practices weren't intense enough. That is how competitors respond sometimes...it's a natural part of the game especially at that age.
It was rumored three kids tried ecstasy and then Howland had them tested days later. He fired a team manager for partying with the players...good. This article is b.s..

The real question is how badly UCLA and its alumni want to get rid of this guy. The story gives them a perfect excuse to show him the door, without being second guessed.

Forgive me for not knowing the answer to this question: didn't we have a really nice member who came onboard when Lavin came here, who used to give us all good incite into Lavin's years at UCLA??

Wonder what he thinks of this UCLA stuff?

I think it's pretty damning to Howland for sure. It seems like the kind of stuff ucla fans were looking for to get Howland out of there, but the grass isn't always greener. I can't see them keeping him around much longer. Kinda crazy when you contrast Howland's relationship to his players vs Lavin though, who they canned after one losing season. Lavin still great friends with droves of players that he coached, and is still hiring former players, havin them on campus all the time, and meeting with former players for dinner when on recriting trips. Makes one appreciate the qualities of the guy that we hired in contrast.

Coaches have different roles on a staff. Somebody has to be the bad cop. I doubt Howland has the personality to pull off the cool coach role. That role is easily filled by a younger assistant not too far removed from the game.

Understoodd, but Howland comes across as neither good cop nor bad cop. Comes across as socially awkward at times, uncaring, uneven with the treatment of different players. No doubt Howland is a good coach. He's a very good coach. I'm just saying this is certainly more damning for Howland as well as UCLA's recruiting efforts under Howland then many might think.

If the Pittsburgh incident happened today, Elijah would have tweeted about it and had the video on his Facebook page before the police were even called.
