Let's stop bullying bad spellers

Guys,

BEfore you think I am pointing fingers at anyone, let me start by saying, I've been guilty of this. In the beginning, i thought it was just laziness when people spell Mullin or Jordan or any player or word incorrectly.

After seeing some redmen.com'ers make these and other mistakes over and over, and then being called to task about it, I realize that it's a mild, but still a form of cyber bullying.

Some people can see a word 1,000 times, and still not spell it correctly. Big deal. But to keep calling guys out on it is a form of bullying, and marginalizing what that have to say.

I think we'd all agree we aren't here to make people feel stupid, and for people who just spell badly, to call them on it continually discourages some potentially great posters to blog here for fear of being called on a deficiency they aren't proud of.

I could be way off on this subject, but let's treat each other with a little more respect. Thanks!

You misspelled buwwy

Bad spelling (and grammar) is one thing. Repeatedly misspelling, like mispronouncing, someone's name repeatedly is a subtle sign of disrespect.

Greatest player in school history and most recognizable name in recent sports history. One of the mods on here once scolded me for spelling Tomas Jasiulonzxzxzxis name incorrectly. With Mullin and Jordan we are not exactly setting the bar high.

Beast, the flip side of this is there are common mistakes made by posters which if carried over to work life suggest to bosses a weakness in written communication. BB forum is not the place to fix it but as an alum I wish there was a way to support people making red flag mistakes in usage and spelling. My alarm bell is people writing "may of" when the meaning is "may have" but the sound in normal speech is almost the same. Being an English grammar and spelling snot is no pleasure but there is probably a cost to some of our members who carry the same errors they make here in to the rest of their writing lives.

This is in no way an official position but the academic hack and obstinately incoherent rambler in me, must as St Thomas would say "Let us distinguish."

Theologically speaking, misspelling Carnesecca could always get a pass. Even if you looked it up before hand you might add an extra "s" and omit a "c" I've seen it misspelled plenty on official/media materials. Even my Americanized Italian name (Ellis Island - check it out) has gotten misspelled my entire life.

OTOH I think if you "Mullen" or "Mullins" this is a venial sin and you are going to get razzed. Far from cyber-bullying this would actually be a spiritual work of mercy - correcting the sinner. If you Ucon or Ucons Cons-R-Us, Yukon etc, this would also be virtuous and praise-worthy along the lines of mocking the devil.

The other stuff, I don't care about.

Paul, I just wonder how you and Beast have so much time to post stuff like this every day? Are you really the same person?

Are you calling me or Beast out as incoherent ramblers?

To answer your question, Beast is a much better person than I and has a lot more to say that is worth reading.

False humility, Paul. Not only are you much brighter, but you have a depth of character I only wish to possess. But you do come from the same town in Queens, which makes us brethren of a sort.

To answer the question, I keep a window open at work, and check it periodically. I post way too much, and probably should have been banned a long time ago.

On the old Board, wasn't there some kind of code that automatically changed UConn to Yukon? Maybe we could do one so that Mullen always comes out Mullin.

As an aside, I don't know how many times people (usually the casually College Basketball or Pro Basketball fan) would speak to me and refer to Chris as Chris Mullens. Drove me nuts.

Lastly, I am good for typos here and there, but the one I always worry about is Carnesecca.

Nobody should ever misspell Mullin, consistently Mullen. However who the heck knows how to spell Amar Alibegovich? Also you never know who people are, they could be dyslexic or have disability and not catch things as easily.

How many floors up?

It is also quite possible that things are being auto corrected and posters are just not proof reading what they have typed. If you are posting from a mobile device that is bound to happen, especially with names.

what is wrong with me that I am laughing hysterically?

Beast you set yourself up. We are NOT bullying you. Besides I have read more Beast of the East than Tolkien or Tolstoy. I'm not normal.

Thanks Beast
Furthermore people of all educational levels can misspell
"No biggie"
I makey share of mistakes and as a perfectionist - don't like it but trying to chill and not proofread every damn thing
AND
Sometimes as we know the 'brain' in the cell/ computer corrects words and changes them into something not intended...

Kindness, wow

I still have nightmares about failing in the 3rd grade spelling bee finals and it's been downhill ever since for me

I don't care when people get their, there's wrong and most other misspellings especially since I have huge mental blocks sometimes with words like Austour-Austor and many others

BUT people need to spell our coaches name right or they go straight to hell
