Lenn Robbins resigns

I didn't really have strong feelings about his work either way, but I think this will make a lot of people happy around here:

I'm not and I don't understand why anyone would be. Whatever problems or disagreements you might have had with him, Robbins, as Salty Dog pointed out, has kept St. John's relevant to the NYC sports scene through some pretty dismal years. And with newspapers losing money and slashing costs & staff, I don't see anyone stepping in to fill his role. Our loss more than the Post's.

They will have a college reporter who reviews football and hoops just like Lenn.

Oh, they may have someone replace him, but don't count on it being someone who'll be -- or allowed to be -- as St. John's-centric as Robbins was.

Agree with many here. Whether you agreed with/liked much of what Lenny wrote or not, he wrote about us a lot (probably more than we deserved at times) and often times it was about topics the fan base cared about. When there was all of that speculation back in 11/12 regarding Lavin's future with this program - and nobody was talking about it except on these boards - Lenny went out and got a big interview with Lavin primarily on that speculation. Think Rubin did as well, good job by both of them. I'd rather have those kind of stories than not.

The hope is that it's all moot anyway. If we are good, especially if we are really good, we are going to get plenty of coverage and won't have to worry about wheter or not one or a few reporters are going to keep us in the media. In addition under Lavin the visibility of our program in both mainstream and social media has improved 20-fold. It is difficult to imagine that our international trip would have gotten the type of exposure - live tweeting, tweets from national anylsts, video recap every day, etc. - 5 years ago even if all of the same resources had been available. Lavin has clearly made entering the 21st Century a priority and it's welcomed.

What about Marc Raimondi? He is a young sports writer for the Post and SJU class of 06 I believe. He has written some good articles in the Post before, and some in the Queens Courier about us. He also covered SJU for the torch back in his school days. Would be nice to see his point of view. He is also a poster here I believe.

I think Kieran Darcy would do a nice job, I don't remember him being critical of us as someone mentioned, but even if he was- so what?

Lenn definitely kept the Johhnies relevant with his articles.

I wouldn't say Lavin trusted him though, he was harsh on the program and fans here and there which I did not specifically like.

I doubt the Post puts anyone full time on STJ again unless we reach mid-80s popularity.

My only disagreement there would be that if the News has Rubin full time the Post will not let them be the only one. I can see them giving it to someone in a hybrid role where they do SJU and something else where there are minimal conflicts.

The Post is in retraction mode, slowly shedding a large chunk of its newsroom. While its sports section sells the paper and won't be subject to as many cuts as other sections, I can't see them assigning a full time traveling beat reporter during the season.

Anyway after old Rupe kicks the can, the Post is toast. New blood at News Corp will not keep such a major money loser.

news corp already split and spit out the unprofitables into a new group.
lenn is just the latest casualty.
don't look for him to be replaced with anyone who wants a living wage.
re: darcy. i think he's a great read. we don't need homers.

I like Darcy's stuff as well. He's fair. Definitely not afraid to critique but I don't think he goes looking for it - it's not like there hasn't been plenty of critiquing warranted. Gives credit when due and I think will only continue to do so as we elevate our status.

Never understood why lenn went out of his way to protect norm after years 4 and 5 when he deserved to be fired

It was mentioned above Zach and Howie Kussoy are splitting it.

Above where? Thus thread?

Thought it was. It was tweeted by SJU Basketball and I thought it was in the thread. Maybe the other board. Maybe I'm imagining. But the Tweet was for real.
