Legends of Basketball / Pete Vecsey

I was attending Dillard University in New Orleanss during the first season of the ABA, 1967-68. A friend of mine who had just graduated from Dillard, Marlbert Pradd, was playing for the Buccanners. I was fortunate to get tickets to every game. That team had Larry Brown, Doug Moe, Wendell Ladner. Red Robbins. Jimmy Jones, Red Robbins, and others.

I used to read Pete Vecsey's column in the Post and found his writing to be very condescending. Sometime in the late 90's or early 200's, he wrote in his column that Larry Brown was a member of the original Kentucky Colonels. This was my chance, I sent an email to him at the Post addressed to "Little Petey Perfect", advising him that he was wrong and didn't know shit, lol.

He was very connected and occasionally would drop insider information in his column. One time before a game in Charolette, Charlesw Oakley kicked Jeff McInnis' ass. In writing about it in the post, Vecsey stated that Oakley was being fined but Phil Ford was paying the fine for him. This alluded to the fact that while a student at North Carolina, McInnis had an affair with Ford's wife who was his tutor.

Through a co worker of mine, John "Butch" Purcell, I had the opportunity to meet Vecsey and talk to him on several occasions. John and Pete used to coach together at Rucker Park. In person, I found Vecsey to be a very engaging person. He atteneded numerous affairs in Harlem supporting former players and coaches. He has a very strong relationship with former St Johns player Ed Searcy.

I have come to realize that he viewed his column like an actor playing a part. He found a way to connect with his readers. Some liked him and some hated him, but we all read him.

For those of you who enjoyed George Vecsey's writings, he can be found on georgevecsey.com.     Thanks a lot . If anyone reads George's stories , you know immediately he's a Pro!    He , like many Baseball Writers felt it was terrible that Gil Hodges was not in the HOF . First as a Player , he might have been the best fielding right handed first baseman ever plus , he could hit ! Gil usually batted Clean up for the Boys of Summer . Right after Duke Snider . Sorry I drifted off topic . Hey , it's Christmas and a temporary dispensation is in order . Thanks Jim F for the link .  Tell George I will try and find his email  address in my archives . My wife's family still lives in Port Washington but , no visiting this year . Maybe next year . Tell him , I'll buy him a drink at Louie's .

Not certain as to the genesis, but he was no fan of Louie.         I doubt it was George Vescey , the true Journalist of the family . My conversations with George about St John's were very positive . Except for the way the School forced Joe Lapchick into Retirement . The Sports writing Community were very friendly and supportive of Joe . They thought he was treated badly .  Louie was always a likeable  munchkin and I can't believe it was George who disliked him . Must have been Pete , who could be prickly at Times .

Yes, was referring to Pete, not George.

Someone may be a great guy in person and see his role in media as some sort of performance art where he takes on a persona but that doesn't excuse the comments or behavior.

Howard Stern as a young broadcaster and a music and hollywood outsider created an image as an outrageous radio broadcaster.   He stalked and embarrassed actors, made homophobic and racist comments and skits, and attacked veteran broadcasters like Imus and Larry King.

Now very wealthy with a huge audience, he is enlightened, supports gay rights and civil rights issues. And cozies up to hollywood and tv stars and musicians.

Which guy is real?  I don't really care but he made a name for himself defaming everything and everyone. And that doesn't excuse him if that was an act.

Vecsey uses the power of the pen in quite not as obnoxious way, but still abrasive and obnoxious.  I'm sure his targets don't feel that it's just an act.

Just a flip side if the nice guy in person story.
