Lavin

Hypothetically if Steve decided to hang them up would the choice be Cluess or Dunlap? Just wondering if anyone had an opinion.

Dunlap, then Danny Hurley. Dunlap because he has experience with these kids.

I expect Steve Lavin to retire as St. John's coach when he reaches age 65 or so, but not until then.

Steve Lavin is the Head Coach of St. John's and I expect him to remain, in that position for a long time.

I like Lavin and hope Lavin comes back but I think Lavin will resign after this year. Lavin is seing how hard it is to get these 4 and 5 star recruits to pick St. John's. I was listening to the interview with Ricardo Gathers and he is going to pick Kentucky, Duke, Baylor or possibly the hometown team LSU. He wants to win a championship and go pro.. Lavin and his staff need to recruit the best players in NYC who want to go to St. John's. Look at Pollee and Lindsey.

How hard it is to get 4 and 5 star recruits. he got 9 in his first full recruiting year. If Gathers wants to win a championship, why wouldn't he come to st johns that has a great nucleas coming back nest year and he can be a piece to the puzzzle that gets that championship.

And if his health is good, why would Lavin resign? Because he cant bring quality talent to new york? That is sort of a defeatest outlook that I dont think Lavin has. He wants to bring a winner to st. john's and again if he is healthy, I see him doing it.

Go back on your meds !!
Let us know if an intervention is needed!!
BTW, drinking from Marco Baldi's sangria pitcher is not a wise decision if you are truly a redmen fan.

Remember though, this is coming from a poster who believes that San Diego State is the "premier" program on the west coast...

LOL@'72. Your post is spot on, '72. This sounds like a poster who is trying to bait the natives.

For the life of me I still don't understand why posters keep harping on the theme that we "need to focus on NYC recruits". I think this is the most self-destructive recruiting philosophy possible. Polee's dad forced him to transfer, and Lindsey was from Philly, practically down the block. From all that we've heard location played NO factor with Nuri, and was a second or third priority for Polee behind his dad's desire to see Dwayne get less competition and more playing time.

We need to recruit kids who fit the system and want to buy into the program. Those should be the only prerequisites. Have talent and want to be here. Who cares if they're from Michigan, Texas or North Carolina?

Local players will always be a significant part of the program because naturally our coaches here more about them and can visit their games more regularly. But I would look at players irregardless of location, and solely with an eye toward what we need and what the player adds to the program on the court.

i think that anyone who looks at what Lavin recruited for this year can see that, regardless of Nuri, if we had the other two who opted out this team would be off the charts and in the top 10. We need another big man next year and another point guard. Also I stil find it unbelievable as to how many of the posters here have essentially given up on this season. There are a lot of games / big games left and this team is improving. The loss to UConn is a setback to some degree but it is a road loss. The key is to win the BE home games and pick up a win or two on the road.

It wasnt a setback. That was an away game against a top 10 team. We were expected to loose. It was another learning experince. I think we have a shot at finishing 500 in the BE. If we do that we ll make the NIT.

In all Lavin's interviews, SNY, Redstorm Report, etc., he indicated he is recruiting six players for next year. This well deserved rest while recovering from cancer has given him a fantastic opportunity to look at recruits for the 2012- 13 season. Afterall, he couldn't be on the road recruiting if he was coaching. It's almost a mixed blessing, especially since we may not get Sampson or Gathers. And as many have posted he doesn't have many recruits to choose from.

Why didnt he go after more recruits earlier. It seems like all the recruiting efforts were on Gathers and Anderson. You have to have backop plans, especially with the questionable academics of our 2011 recruits.

Hahahahaha! Thanks for the laugh - I needed that!

Yeah, Lavin has had such a hard time getting big time recruits to come to St. John's and NYC and play at MSG...Lavin has quite a record in getting guys to the pros so if you are going to troll a St. John's forum then you better do your homework

I haven't given up, but am being realistic. The real concern is burnout, both from a physical and emotional standpoint. Essentially 6 players, with 5 being freshmen, playing in a very physical conference. There is no rest, even in blowouts, That goes back to the first game. Depth is so crucial to this team, especially considering they are challenged in the half court game. I am not worried about wins and losses. Staying healthy and being committed to the teachings of the staff is really what this year is all about. That's life in a big conference when you start from scratch and lose 2 recruits that likely would have seen major minutes.

How short are our memories that we have to have this discussion every month. On September 19 Gathers and Woods were commits. Pelle and Sampson were committed and assumed to become eligible. Nuri was on campus. There was one scholarship available for 12/13 and all efforts were focused on Kyle for that last ship. Over the next 7 days 3 guys were gone (with Garrett to return), Kyle went elsewhere and Lavin and staff were behind the 8-ball for the 11/12 class (and coach was probably getting ready for surgery). Things changed very quickly in September.
