Lavin on the fan today at 5. n/m

He will be in studio, should be at least 20 min interview.

Sounds like somebody is pulling out all the publicity stops to try to get a contract extension while his team is still hot ....

He was on Michael Kay's Show yesterday too. The publicity is good for him but it is also good for the school also.

lol You're just too predictable, Des. Before the last couple of days, if you'd thought of it, you'd have been criticizing him for not getting us out in the media and getting all the good pub.

You need to mix in a changeup now and again.. keep us off balance. Then your fastball - such as it is - might have a better effect!

said many of the same things but the thing that stood out is that he wants carnesecca to be sold out on friday. Atmosphere is not the same when it is half empty.

Your worst nightmare

You never know, maybe Desco80 has a coach in mind who could vault St. John's in to the top twenty, fill the Garden, wear a tie at all times, recruit nothing but 4 year blue chippers and represent St. John's in the media very well. However I doubt it.

Benigno specifically said that Lavin wore a tie during the interview....LOL!

Desco must've been in heaven

I only tuned in about halfway through the interview, but I have to say I like what I heard from coach. He even was self depricating at times and said he didn't want to speak in cliches or just give us "coach speak", but..
I appreciate that kindve self-awareness and honesty.

Frankly, it's the best interview I've heard from coach L in a long time. I didn't feel like he was selling us a used car.
I hope he can lead us on the path he has planned for the program.

Probably the most important thing I heard was how Lavin believed being ranked helps in recruiting.
This I believe is tantamount to success when it comes to recruiting.

I heard the interview. He mentioned he and his wife were that same night (last night) hosting a Christmas party to thank all of the high-giving STJ BB donors at the Crosby Hotel.

Anybody go?

Anybody know what event he was talking about; is it his private event or a school event?

Anyway, I liked what I heard especially him knowing so much about our rich BB history and tradition, right down to making the distinction between Al and Dick McGuire and Frank Maguire, and where we rank 'all time" in NCAA appearances, wins, national players of the year, NBA-ers, etc.., etc.

The best is he didn't use two or three adjectives to describe the same thing multiple times!

He did use the hammer-to-rock thing.

All in all positive stuff.

I was there last evening at the event in SoHo.

Great time had by all.

President "Bobby" Gempesaw and his wife attended along with about another 50 or so long time supporters of the program.

Alll of us spoke about how well Jamal, Khadim and Sir Dominic represent the University.

They are quintessential scholar/athlete's and make us all proud to be St. John's grads.

The Spirits must have really been flowing to include Sir Dom on that list. :) Just kidding, I love Sir Dom who always gives us a punchers chance in every game! :)

Heard the interview. It was okay. Any publicity is good and the 5 o clock hour on WFAN is prime real estate where we usually hear Girardi and Tom Coughlin.

I like Joe Benigno and I think Evan Roberts has no business being on the radio, but they dont cover SJU daily so they werent as good as if this were for the Jets or Knicks....

Example was saying we should have gotten into the NCAAs with 20 wins last year - we all know thats not the case but Benigno just looked at the record and said that.

Here were some other things Lavin said:

- Came into SJU and had to do a complete rebuild.
- the 2000-2010 decade for SJU Hoops was terrible (not his words) and we are still top 10 all time in major college bb categories (7th if you remove the last decade)
-good to have balance of upperclassmen and lowerclassmen who can contribute. Spoke about Harkless and how if he came back he would have been a National Player of the Year candidate and that wouldve added 6-7 wins to that years team having a player like him.
-He understands the 1 and dones and he can see kids going overseas to play instead of going to college to make money because "the family cant pay the electric bill"
- All blood work with his cancer has come back fine
- Doesnt feel like recruiting at SJU is as hard as it was at UCLA, you just have to sell different things (i.e.- media capital of the world, NYC, MSG)
- Was attracted to the SJU job because he was raised irish catholic and because of SJU's vincentian values.
- Carnesseca Arena is great to play in when its sold out but when its "half filled" would rather play in MSG.
- Thinks the Big East will get 6 NCAA bids this year and likened it to the PAC10 of the 1990s where UCLA and Arizona won titles, Stanford went to a Final 4 and USC Arizona St and Washington went to Regionals.

Anything i missed please add i know i typed this fast.
