Lav showing us lots of love

Lavs has lots of love for SJU.  He will always be one of the Redmen.

Had his faults or what could have been as coach but glad he's in our corner as supporter with his media role.

I have so much respect for him. It really speaks to his character to how he was fired from the school but never held a grudge and speaks extremely highly of the team. In addition, not many people could take a job like he did after getting fired and be forced to speak about the team that fired him. Classy and stand up gentleman.

I liked Lav when he was here, gave me personally probably the best memories I have as a fan, and didn’t think he should have been let go. I think he’s probably widely considered to at least be a quality head coach. But in terms of broadcasting/studio/analyst work, he’s really as good as it gets.

I never was in support of letting Lav go especially the way it was handled.  IMO had he remained we would not need another rebuilding era.

I was on the fence as far as whether he should have stayed. The biggest "what if" is if he never gets sick. Perhaps Dunlap is there longer. Perhaps Gathers stays with us. Perhaps the combination of beating cancer with other personal issues doesn't take the toll, because I think that impacted his desire to grind it out like most college coaches have to in order to maintain consistent success.

He had us rolling with a plan that was derailed by the illness. And I give him credit for not cutting a deal with the devil like Willard did, because if Whitehead comes Lavin probably is extended. Knowing us we wouldn't have been able to dodge the bullet like Willard and the Hall did.

Still I think Lavs found his home in the booth/studio. He's one of the best. He could still probably recruit his a&$ off if motivated, because he was top tier in that aspect IMO. And he can relate to kids. But I think he's better suited for the TV stuff than the grind that is most high major college basketball jobs.

Ask anybody in the athletic department (especially in the lower rungs), who the nicest guy was there and many would point to Lavin.

Guy was derided by some here as a phony, empty suit. I never got that impression. Dude is real.

I was a fan of the Lavin hiring. I stayed a fan of his through his illness (also a prostate cancer survivor (mine came years after his; We both treated with the same team at MSK; he was put in touch with those doctors by Mike Repole).

Steve bravely tried to come back a bit too soon. He was a good fit for the City and our school. I was sad to see him go and wished him well.

He is actually very partial to us and gives us sometiems even more credit than we deserve, but hey, other media types ignore us so it evens out.

Now, since we ended up moving on from Lavin, I can't be happier with our current coach.Class all the way around.

Go Lavin, Go Johnnies.

Lavin came to us as a Broadcaster who had been out of Coaching since leaving UCLA . Think he was in the booth for a number of years prior to that . His did well with a team of Robert's recruits who were all Seniors . His first Recruiting class was outstanding , Harkless , Pointer , Harrison , Greene, etc . Sampson too , but he had to stay in Prep school for another year .  After that first Recruiting class , the only other high recruits he got were Jordan and Obepka . High talant but , other issues interfered . His game Coaching was below average for the BE but , all up he did ok . After Jordan and Obepka his recruiting dried up and his interest seemed to wane when he saw what was coming after Harrison and Pointer , etc left . The Cupboard was totally bare for Mullin when he took over . I give Lavin applause for his continued support for the Johnnies on air . Classy . He's returned to the Booth which is a better fit fur him than the sidelines .

You're unlikely to find a fairer summary of the Lavin tenure than the above.

Lavin is a good dude.

I saw him at the US Open one year, and he was gracious enough to take a few minutes to chat with me and take a picture.

Most recenlty, I created a sju video for twitter. i direct messaged him, asking if he would retweet. he responded with a 'happy to'. after his share, my video took off.

i wanted lavin to stay.

i felt like he brought a perfect nyc personality. he was media friendly. espn loved him. related well with young people. seemed like he had his pulse on culture.

glad the school still has connections with him.  we certainly need media love.

I will not comment on Lavin the coach, other than to say full disclosure, I was clearly in favor of his firing. Having said that, he has to get props for the way he has carried himself towards SJU since he left.

Reminds me of the way the late Gary Carter was thought of when he was on the Mets. Some felt he was a phony always smiling and mugging for the cameras while others though him a genuine nice guy. Believe it was Daryl Strawberry who admitted and has recriminations about misjudging him and wishing he had treated him better now feeling Gary was trying to be helpful toward a younger player going through some difficulties.

You must have forgotten about the pre game and post game quotes he used to give that would drive this board nuts. While he was coach, it came off as a bunch of fluff, which is turn made him appear fake and not genuine. Now that we've learned more about him, we know that's just his personality, He's as real as they come.

My sentiments exactly. Most importantly, Lavin seems truly happy with what he's doing, and I'm happy for him.
