Lav: Obekpa Will Average Double-Double

Oh I am so excited to read the responses on this. Prepare the dead horse for some more flogging!

Let the hyperbole begin!

In all seriousness though, if the point guards are doing their jobs, Chris should be averaging 10 points a game. It's almost not on him. It's on his teammates (and coaches) to get him the ball in the right spot. He should be all about 3 easy dunks a game, some free throws and a couple of put-backs each and every game.

The 10 rebounds a game almost seems harder. 23 players last year averaged 9.6 or more rebounds a game last year at the D-1 level. Most of them were at smaller schools. I assume Thomas will be hoovering rebounds. 10 rebounds is super hard to do, especially if he's still trying to shot-block. Don't expect that.

Chris has spent this summer working on his game, especially on rebounding and moves around the basket. He should get 4-6 pts a game on offensive rebounding alone. If he does this, then getting another 6 pts during the flow of the game should not be that difficult. 5 rebounds each half and yes he can average a double. People fail to realize that Chris is still learning the game. He has also matured enough to understand that he has to work very hard if he wants to achieve his goals.

Simply put, if Obekpa were to average a double double (not gonna happen) then we would be the best team in the big east.

You got it right the game is not about blocking shoots. For the last 2 years shoot blocking has adversly effected rebounding.

I hope the double double isn't in turnovers and tantrums. As for points and boards, that would require more than doubling his 13-14 rebound output and about 2.6 times his point output. For players that improved greatly, no big deal, especially if the guards focus on getting him the ball. He has to start with getting to the line more than once a game, and making 65% instead of well under 50% Assuming 22 and 16 and 10 from the 3 guards, somebody better step up or it will be a long season, and I don't mean because it extends deep into the post season.

22 16 and 10? As in dlo 22 ppg, sheed 16 ppg, and phil 10 ppg?

If that happens we wont need much from the rest.

Probably wishful thinking. That's all I have left based on a realistic look at the roster.

"Lavin praised his offseason, saying he has had “the best offseason in terms of development of any player I’ve coached in my career.”

Shades of Bill Walton, but encouraging nonetheless.

If he can stay out of foul trouble, no reason he can't average 10 pts 8 boards and 4 blocks.

Foul trouble is the key with him, he has to get the early fouls down.

Speaking of which, Did anyone get a feel for Delarosa last nite? He will have to back up Obekpa at some point.

You guys have to listen to Marillac once in a while!
This kid is primed for an explosion. Anyone that has really looked closely at this kid (besides the shot-blocking) sees a big with exceptional passing ability and vision, very fluid movements, and tenacious attitude on the glass. He must have been a soccer player, because he was the only big we had last year to understand spacing and angles and pick and rolls (Branch, you gotta step up because you are the best we've got here). He's not a stiff kid that you see in most bigs...he moves more like a SF, but he needed that to translate to the basketball more with some go-to moves.

That written, AVERAGING a double-double seems unlikely. Fouls will be an issue on both ends. He is very aggressive and he moves a lot on his screens. Our guards also don't always reward our bigs with good positioning enough and that is the most frustrating thing a big can deal with. We also have the worst entry passes you'll see at any college level. The last two are understandable given the fact our guards haven't played with an inside scorer for three years.

I'll stick to my prediction that Obekpa is double-digits scoring 20+ games this year. I think the pick-and-roll will become a big factor with Sampson and Sanchez gone.

Tough to get a feel on any of the players, but from what little I saw of him last night, Delarosa should be redshirted, with the hope of him taking some of the baby fat off in time for next season.

If we are to force the issue on defense, he can't be a part of it, moving around like that.

I wasn't there, but I hear he is not in decent enough shape to merit much time. I guess if bigs get in foul trouble or are injured he will have to be thrown in there. Btw, his brother has very little value. At least Adonis has some skills & upside. I saw Smith of Georgetown trimmed down considerably this summer. ADR needs to dedicate himself to getting in game shape. On a guard oriented, up tempo team, in his current state. he will be sucking wind & unproductive.

I am assuming he was on a pretty strict diet and conditioning program over the summer. I haven't seen him since last season but it doesn't sound like he's made much progress. I know Abitello worked him real hard at CTK. It's going to take a herculean effort on his part get in game shape. I truly hope he can do it.

I saw him over the summer he couldn't get over half court but looks like he has some skills if he would get in shape.
