Lapchick Honor On Campus

With classes starting again I thought it would be a good time to revisit the topic that we were discussing back in March about trying to see how much support we could gather to honor coach Lapchick in some way on campus (some suggested a statute outside Carnesecca which I think would be great). JerseyShore Johnny had done a lot of work on this and we had support from members here also (PDC Jay, Redken, PA Lemole, BrookJersey Redmen to name a few). I think we were unofficially at 3K in terms of unofficial donation support just from starting a topic on this site. Was hoping that we could pick this up again and see where we could take it. JerseyShore would you be up for continuing your efforts with the University?

As someone who got to see the last year of Lapchick before Louie took over, this is a long time coming. He was outstanding and very successful. I would be happy to contribute and once others read more about this legend, I'm confident they will too.

Glad to hear the movement is still alive. Coach Lapchick is an icon, one of basketball's legends, and someone who deserves maximum recognition.

It would definitely fit with what the university is trying to do to create a plaza in front of CA. What a great centerpiece! I wonder if someone could talk to some student organizations and maybe get them in on this.

Problem is most students don't have any idea of who Joe Lapchick was -- something a life-sized statue of Coach in front of CA might change). Makes more sense to reach out to alums and to the badger the administration. (Ironically, just read today that Kareem Abdul Jabbar will be getting a statue at UCLA. If they can do it, why can't St. John's do it for Joe?)

Thought the news was Kareem getting statue from Lakers outside the Forum in LA.

You're correct Bamafan. Pauley renovation plans include a statue for Wooden only funded by boosters.

As Gilda Radner would say: Never mind.

Lapchick needs a statue not only for what he did for SJU, but for what he did for integration, and just common decency throughout his life, a legend and one-of-a-kind.

Long overdue.

I’m in!!

Would suggest someone open a bank account where donation could be accepted. I'm in Califonia in addition I'm lucky I can balance my checking account and use an ATM card.

Hoping to hear from JerseyShoreJohnny. I believe he may have reached out to Monasch last year and was going to follow up in the fall. Not sure how much we need to show the school that we are serious but if we are already at 3K just from a few people on this site, I am sure an official "campaign" of some type would easily get us to whatever number we need to get to to make this happen.

For comparison purposes the artist doing the Wooden statue at UCLA, Blair Buswell, also did the Gen. Neyland statue outside of U Tenn's stadium. That one cost $385,000 in 2010.  I did find a 12.5 inch nude he did for $5,350 but her breasts were a bit small for my liking. ;)

Don't think that will enter into this equation for Coach Lapchick. If there's an added cost factor it'll be for his 6'-5" or so height.

Just got back from Ireland a few hours ago and saw this post.

Yes, I have been working with several high profile folks from the univesity, Gus Alfieri, Coach Lapchick's son Richard, and a few grads (such as myself) who are very, very passionate about this initiative (for the last 6 months).

A statue would cost somewhere in the $125K area (at a minimum).

Have been working with the same sculptor who did Kareem's new Staple Center statue, as well as M.J.'s statue in front of The United Center.

As with most things, the key is fund raising. Expect to hear more about specific initiatives over the next few months.

Would like to have the life sized statue of Coach Lapchick placed in front of CA.

Want to get this done as soon as we can so that Coach Cernesecca and Coach Kaiser, among others, can enjoy the unveiling.

jsj, thanks so much for all your time and effort in following through on this -- a truly, truly worthy cause. It would be great if we could get this project off the ground in the foreseeable future so that it would be possible to unveil the statue of Coach Lapchick some time next season. Aside from a national title, nothing would make me happier. Keep up the great work, and keep us all informed!

Plastic and bronze don't go too well together. ;)

A less expensive way to honor our HOF coach would be to correct an earlier mistake, and name either the arena or the court for Joe Lapchick, leaving the other named for Louie. Honor our two most influencial coaches at the same venue. As I mentioned before, there aren't any other campus arenas, that I am aware of, where both the building and the court are named for the same person.

A little too late for that, don't you think?
