Kevin Garnett and SJU - Hypothetical

Let me start by saying, I am fully aware that what I am about to propose has little to no chance of happening and is an iffy proposition, at best, BUT...

Amidst the reports that Kevin Garnett is considering retirement and exploring "basketball-related" options off the court, he would be an intriguing choice to replace Mike Dunlap.

Garnett would instantly give the Johnnies some added panache with recruits. He would have the ability to practice with the team each day and work with them on defense. He would be about as good a mentor as possible for young big men like Sampson and Obekpa (sp?).

Furthermore, Garnett would have the freedeom to join a playoff-bound NBA team in March without having much of a negative impact on the team (considering he would presumably be used as a practice influencer as opposed to a game-day tactician).

In summary:

-Garnett would be a positive influence on young big men
-I beleive he would excel in teaching defensive fundamentals (a role Mike Dunlap has vacated)
-St. John's would probably gain some "street cred" with recruits
-In losing Dunlap, we lost a tactical coach, not a recruiter, so therefore Garnett's lack of recruiting experience would be moot, or close to it
-It would give Garnett the opportunity to stay in shape, get paid (albeit, less than he is accustomed) and still chase a ring in the NBA, should he choose to, without hurting St. John's much. (Understanding that he would have had roughly 8 months working with the team along with the ability to return by July for Summer and Pre-Season activities.

I understand we would probably want someone with more game-day coaching experience. I just thought he could potentially be a great addition to the staff. I'll admit it's far fetched and I fully expect the backlash from the forum here.

Go Johnnies!

Ummmm...no. I was going to suggest the Psychic John Edwards though. He's a local guy, used to be a phlebotomist at a hospital on LI and his psychic abilities make him perfect for the job. I mean...why bother with tactics when our psychic Associate Head Coach càn figure out exactly what the other team is doing all game?He can even use some psychological warfare against opposing coaches and players. Maybe contact a dead relative and really distract the other team and take them out of the game? I don't know... Just sayin.

LOL. He's from my high school. He graduated I think 1 year ahead of me

Well, forgive me for posting such "silliness". I was merely stating some thoughts that I considered when I read that Garnett was possibly retiring. I clearly understood when I wrote the post that it was far-fetched and stated as much in my post. I think you're both missing the point.

On the other hand, Adam Zagoria, from whom the members of this site acquire much of their breaking news and recruiting info, suggested Earl Watson (currently a PG on the Utah Jazz and a former Lavin disciple) as a potential replacement for Dunlap. Is it wrong of me to think Garnett would probably be better in the same role? I can't imagine Earl Watson would command more respect and attention from the players than Garnett.

I fully understand that the team needs a more tactical coach than Garnett could be and I believe I mentioned just that in my post. Apparently this is not the place for a fun, thought provoking, hypothetical question.

Thanks for the welcome to Redmen.com, I'll go ahead and take my thoughts elsewhere.

It's sometimes the other way around.

He also wasn't suggesting Earl Watson. He mentioned Watson because that is what he heard from a source. Zags doesn't particularly deal in the hypothetical when he's breaking news or bringing recruiting info. He usually mentions what he has heard from sources.

This is a message board where the hypothetical is common. I didn't take offense to your post, but I guess some posters felt your post was too far out in left field (hypothetical or not).

As far fetched as your hypothesis is....(do you really think that practicing a few times a week with college kids will get Garnett in NBA game shape?), it was an interesting read.

Don't take it personal. It's f'ing hot outside and it gets us on edge.

Your idea might have been a little crazy but there isn't much else to talk about this offseason now other than planning hoops trips to Charleston and San Fran.

Maybe we can invent some new job title. Director of tall guys or something and put him on the payroll.

Or since he never went to college lets give him some sort of scholarship to take classes and make him the student manager. Gotta think outside the box.

I dont think his idea is that crazy. I'd like to see what coach K does, what does he have about 20 former PGs coaching including 3 on his current staff.

Maybe I was harsh, but I still think it's a dumb idea. I also think Garnett is a total punk and would never want him around the program.

Hey, KG and Malik Sealy were best friends, and Malik died in that tragic car accident on his way back from KG's birthday. Maybe KG coaches at STJ in homage to the memory of his best friend...and then Oliver Stone does a movie about it. :silly:

Gman man of diplomacy and tact

Yes, clearly Gman's original response was much more harsh than referring to the idea as dumb >-) . Anyway, I don't see this Garnett thing happening, but I must admit the post was funny as were the various responses. Thanks to Joneil66 for a post on the lighter side.

Hey, there are like a million reasons this won't happen but who can blame a guy fro dreaming. A very creative first post and way better than some of the drivel that gets written here on people's 500th post. No need to go elsewhere.

Interesting idea. Not going to happen, but cool to think about.

People need to lighten up on here a little, he stated many times it was extremely unlikely, and the title says hypothetical.

Watch this video:

Garnett: "Malik had me wanting to go to St. John's, and wear the red and be a Redman."

I am going to have to disagree here.. While the idea is a definite stretch, KG is one of the classiest men in the Nba, a top 50 player in league history IMO, and a true g. People see the nasty on the court and assume he's a dbag but he's nothing but respectable to those who have come before him and a true mentor to the youngsters. This is coming from a diehard Knicks fan he's one of the guys you hate to root against.

At the same time gman I can see what you're saying not wanting him around when stuff like this which I personally admire is said.. Truly a polarizing figure which I believe youngsters will gravitate to, just not at the collegiate level.

I don't see the link I posted up there but if you're curious YouTube Kevin garnett Uzi it's pretty comical.

From somewhere in Joneil66's brain came the germ of an idea that to me comes out as "Multimillionaire NBA Superstar retires, Will honor lost teammate Malik Sealy by joining Lavin's staff as student assistant while he resumes his education at STJ and headquarters his business interests in New York. I like it.

Welcome aboard Mr. Oneil66.
MJ, I think the Director of tall guys may come out of Indianapolis. The fake "student manager" slot was awarded to a former point guard last year and you are only allowed one in a four year period.
