Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

Drew earned both his Bachelor's (2014) and Master's (2016) degrees from St. John's University in Sports Management. He worked as a manager and administrative assistant for the Red Storm's men's basketball program from 2011-15 under head coach Steve Lavin.

When Red was in HS always thought he would join his former HS teammate Malik Sealy at St. John's. Seemed to be the perfect PG for us and also thought the other HS teammate that ended up at NC would come here. Remember a game at the Garden where Sealy was playing and his former HS teammates were cheering wildly for the Johnnies.
Brian Reese was the other Tolentine HS and Riverside Church teammate you were probably referring to.

I was hoping the same but alas, it didn’t happen.

1990 was probably the deepest NYC class ever.

We ended up with Shawnelle and Lee Green, but there were FOUR McD All Americans and one all-time NYC great.

Jamal Mashburn: Hayes, Kentucky
Brian Reese: Tolentine, UNC
Adrian Autry: Tolentine, Cuse
Derrick Phelps: CTK, UNC
Khalid Reeves: CTK, Arizona
Rob Phelps: Nazareth, Providence
Rich Ashmeade: Holy Cross, UConn/Rutgers
Norman Marbury: Lincoln, Tennessee/St. Francis

I forgot about Ashmeade and Marbury.

Nelle, class act all the way, another great example of St. John's University producing men of character. We all hear about athletes being entitled or selfish, St. John's men like Nelle, Ty, David Cain and innumerable others are the opposite. Makes this St. John's fan proud.

I love seeing our brothers from earlier eras coming to our games and rooting us on, it seemed to happen so much more these past two years.

But I recall standing in line at the Will Call window at the Garden 7-8 years ago and saw Ty, and Charles Mineland and Lamont Middleton and Sean Muto, and some others, it was fun chatting them up. Brought back good memories.
