Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

I thought he was a step too slow, slightly mechanical, and guys with his body were a dime a dozen and snubbed by the NBA all the time.

But I also figured he'd make $20 million overseas. He's now 60 percent of the way there, and it'll take him only four years instead of 15 bouncing around Europe. Really happy for the guy. He got really lucky in that he landed in one of the few places that knew what to do with him. I think it will lead to a long NBA career and mucho millions for him.

A gréât kid who worked his but off in high school and in college. Just keep improving from year to year and had to play against a bunch of beasts in the Big East from day 1. Ewing, Spriggs and Graham of Georgetown, John Pinone and then Pinckney of Nova, Clark and Murphy of Boston College, Hawkins of Syracuse. Bill never had a night off and I am sure there are other good ones whom I am forgetting , but he never stopped battling and working on the floor.
Parlayed that into a first round pick and a 10 plus year NBA career with 3 NBA championships. the guy is the poster child for hard work and dedication. On top of that just a super nice gentleman, one of the nicest you could ever meet. Always personable and friendly and humble to boot.

Great post RMN. I always kind of underrated Bill W. Came to realize that looking back on his career after the fact.

Van Macon is really one of the good guys in college hoops, respected universally. What can be easily lost in celebrating Julian getting NBA contract is Van convincing Mike Anderson to try to close on him out of high school just as he was about to go prep school route.

Julian was not perfect and frankly I thought he was not quick enough to guard in NBA, but what do I know. Coming to SJU obviously worked out well for him and SJU hoops. Here’s to two class acts, Julian & Van 👏👏👏👏

Both really have positively impacted SJU hoops in such challenging times. Glad Van remained on staff & all the best Julian!
I was pleasantly surprised at how Julian exceeded expectations at St John's and came out of his shell as a person and as a player. He is so easy to continue to root for and I hope he continues his upward trajectory on the court and in life. Just an outstanding young man from a great family.

He is a great representative of what is good about St. John's. Hard work, sacrifice and discipline can help you reach goals that seem out of your reach to others who don't know what you are made of.

If Champagnie is fluent in French it would not surprise me if the winds up as road roomie to a certain top pick in the draft.

Forget basketball. I just hope Curbelo gets help because he is going to ruin all of the opportunities in front of him.

There comes a point when no matter how talented, you are considered toxic and you become a pariah to society.
He seems to be getting worse, which is scary. I really hope that he gets the help he needs, or I fear that his story is going to have a tragic ending.
