Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

Article about Bill Schaeffer (written in 2019):

Nice story. Billy was really funny off the court. With a little encouragement he could be encouraged to do his imitation of Ed Sullivan, thus some of his teammates dubbed him "Sully." A great guy with a great wife.

very few "celebrity" deaths hit me like this one. I never "met" Malik other than a high five or two at alumni hall, but I was very in tune with the CHSAA golden era (to me at least) of 1987 or so through 1993, including as a HS player back then, and die hard family season tix holder for SJU in 80s through mid-90s. Although I was from Queens, I was Tolentine over Molloy any day of the week and recall listening to the CHSAA '87 championship from Fordham on the radio when I was about 12 or so (Malik, Autry, Reese v. Kenny A. & Werdann). Malik represented to me all that was good in the local hoops scene and have so many coming of age memories attending MSG games with my dad and high school teammates where we would hustle down to the Garden after practice or a game. Crushing, heartbreaking, unfair, and I still get choked up when I think of him. RIP 21 and I am sure you are making baseline jumpers from 15' wherever you are.

Silky smooth, class personified.

A previous generation would tell you where they were and what they were doing when they heard about Pearl Harbor or JFK and MLK being assassinated. I can tell you where and what I was doing on 9/11 but before that, I can do the same when I heard on the radio that Malik was killed in a car accident. I will never forget it.

Cecil Rellford, class of 1977.

Loved Cecil Rellford who transferred in from Kentucky St. He teamed with George Johnson and Beaver Smith to form a formidable front court and was the quintessential PF for us.
