Keegan Bradley

Here are some highlights from today's Sports Business Journal.

Golf fans “better get used to -- and embrace -- the new guard” of the PGA Tour, possibly led by the likes of PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley, who “insisted after his win Sunday he would not become one of those one-hit wonders,” according to Mark Cannizzaro of the N.Y. POST. Bradley’s playoff against Jason Dufner for the title “served significant notice of how great the game is even without the biggest stars shining.” Bradley's “electric comeback from five shots down in his final three holes over Dufner was a sign of the times -- a good sign.” With the “powerful combination of his ball striking and keen mental outlook,” the 25-year-old Bradley “figures to be a fixture for a while as a leader of the new guard.” Cannizzaro writes, “He is not alone.” Bradley: "The PGA Tour is so deep. The top players are not dominating like they were, which I think is great for the tour" (N.Y. POST, 8/16). In N.Y., Hank Gola writes Bradley “gave every indication that this will not be his one and only major victory.” Golfer Padraig Harrington said, "The United States has been looking for the next great player. He definitely has the game for it and hitting those shots that he needed down the stretch is going to give him a great deal of confidence" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/16). ESPN's Jim Rome said, “We’re all desperate to anoint the next big thing since the first big thing. ... And inevitably, we just keep slamming the crown on the dome on whoever wins the last big thing and in the end, most of these guys are more flavor-of-the-month than anything else. But I think Bradley is different” (“Jim Rome Is Burning,” ESPN, 8/15).

EYE OF THE TIGER: A BOSTON GLOBE editorial is written under the header, “Keegan Bradley: Golf’s New Savior?” Bradley “will be more than a one-hit wonder.” Great golf "is out there, and soon enough a new star player will get Americans to tune back in" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/16). GOLF.com’s Cameron Morfit wondered if Bradley “will become golf’s next superstar.” Golf is “in between superstars because the moment we seem to have found a prime candidate,” like Rory McIlroy, he “goes back whence he came while yet another new guy, like Bradley, emerges seemingly fully formed.” Some would “still argue that McIlroy is the next" Tiger Woods, and “maybe he will be, but it's far from a foregone conclusion” (GOLF.com, 8/15). In L.A., Bill Plaschke noted the “four biggest tournaments had four different anonymous winners, none of which were named Woods.” Plaschke: “Isn’t golf going to hell in a head cover? Wrong. Golf grows. Golf wins. This transformation to younger, unaffected champions is the best thing to happen to golf since, well, Tiger Woods.” He added, “It’s fun to watch new faces. It's inspiring to feel a different energy.” (LATIMES.com, 8/15).

MR. POPULARITY: In Atlanta, Chris Vivlamore notes Bradley after his win Sunday told radio host Dan Patrick that he wanted to “throw out the first pitch at a Red Sox game,” and by lunch yesterday, PGA Tour officials “had nearly completed the arrangements for the baseball game.” Bradley “went from 3,000 to nearly 30,000 followers on Twitter,” and there were “more than 1,000 friend requests on Facebook” (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 8/16). .

The Barclays Annouces Keegan Bradley Ticket Deal

Red Storm fans can save on tickets to first round of FedEx Cup playoffs.

Watch Keegan Bradley chase the FedEx Cup live at the Barclays.

Aug. 17, 2011

QUEENS, N.Y.--St. John's alumnus Keegan Bradley made history on Sunday as the first former St. John's player to win a major golf championship, claiming the 93rd PGA Championship in exciting fashion.

Now Red Storm fans have an exclusive opportunity to see the newly minted major champion as he pushes towards his next championship goal, The FedEx Cup, through a special ticket offer from the Barclays.

The PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup begin with The Barclays next week where only the top 125 players in the FedExCup standings will be teeing it up at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J. Those who don't earn enough points via the last event of the Regular Season - this week's Wyndham Championship - will be on the sidelines as the race for the FedExCup title, and its $10 million bonus, begins on August 25 with the first round of The Barclays.

With his thrilling win last week at the PGA Championship, Bradley vaulted into the No. 4 position in FedExCup points, trailing only Nick Watney (No. 1), Steve Stricker (No. 2) and Luke Donald (No. 3). The top seven in FedExCup points are not only guaranteed a tee time at Plainfield Country Club next week, but are also secure in making it all the way to the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, the culminating event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup

Bradley won earlier this year at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, and with his win at the PGA in his first major championship appearance, he is a leading candidate for PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year honors and most certainly in the discussion for PGA TOUR Player of the Year. A strong showing in the Playoffs would only strengthen that argument.

The Barclays has been a part of the PGA TOUR schedule since 1967 when Jack Nicklaus won the inaugural event at Westchester Country Club. Since that time, some of the greatest players in the game have earned the title including World Golf Hall of Fame members Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, Raymond Floyd, Seve Ballesteros, Hale Irwin, Curtis Strange and the new defending champion, Matt Kuchar, 2010 winner of The Barclays.

Many of the world's current top players have won the event as well, including two-time champions Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia, and four-time champion Vijay Singh. As the first of four events in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, The Barclays plays a leading role in the FedExCup, the season-long competition that is the centerpiece of the PGA TOUR season.

SJU and Keegan Bradley fans will be able to purchase a daily ground pass for just $35, $10 off the price to the general public, by clicking here. When prompted, the discount password is SJU. The offer is only good until 11:59 p.m. EST on Friday, Aug. 19, so Red Storm fans must act quickly, as The Barclays expects a sellout.

Stay tuned to RedStormSports.com for all of Keegan Bradley's latest accomplishments, and be sure to catch him live at The Barclays next week as he pursues the FedEx Cup.

Keegan, a Red Sox fan, threw out the first pitch last night at Fenway Park. A picture of him doing so appears in today's New York Daily News.

Atlanta, it would seem, agrees with Keegan Bradley. A month after winning the PGA down the road, Bradley's 64 gives him the early lead at East Lake. In-progress leaderboard »

Keegan Bradley To Play In PGA Grand Slam Of Golf

PGA Tour rookie and STJ alum makes first appearance at golf's all-star game

Bradley won the Wanamaker Trophy in a classic finish to propel himself to his first major title

Oct. 18, 2011

QUEENS, N.Y.--St. John’s alumnus Keegan Bradley is back on the competitive links on Tuesday as part of a very select foursome of players. As the 2011 PGA Champion, Bradley will take part in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, a two day event featuring the four major champions from the 2011 season.

Bradley will tee off at 9:30 a.m. EST, 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Port Royal Golf Course (Southampton, Bermuda) along with 2011 Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel, 2011 U.S. Open Champion Rory McIlroy and 2011 British Open Champion Darren Clarke.

The event has been held since 1979 as a four-way competition between the winners of that year’s four major tournaments. This year’s competition will mark the first time in the event for all four players in the PGA Tour’s version of an All-Star Game.

The tournament features 36 holes of stroke-play golf, played over two days, with the winner taking home a nice $600,000 prize. However, no one goes home empty-handed, with second place receiving $300,000, third place getting $250,000, and fourth place taking home $200,000.

The festivities have already started in Bermuda, with the four golfers taking part in the annual Champions Clinic, where they showcase and explain the best parts of their game to the fans gathered at Port Royal. Bradley chose to teach on the art of the belly putter, a signature piece of equipment that has been experimented with many of the world’s best since the Red Storm great hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy in August.

Both rounds will be shown on TNT at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday and Wednesday. For more information as Bradley continues his phenomenal rookie campaign at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, log on the RedStormSports.com and follow the Red Storm men’s golf team (@STJ_MensGolf) on Twitter.

Looks like he and Rorymac came to play while Schwartzel and Darren came to par-tay!

Do you think if the university hosted an event in his honor (similar to last night's event at D'Angelo) there would be a good turnout ??? Seems to be an idea worth entertaining. I would attend, and think there would be a good amount of interest. What say you ?

 http://espn.go.com/golf/prescup11/story/_/id/7125871/geoff-ogilvy-criticizes-fred-couples-early-tiger-woods-pick-presidents-cup

"You can't ever say that picking Tiger Woods is a bad selection, but the way he picked him ... " Ogilvy said. "I don't agree with the way he picked him, announcing it months early, basically telling the guys who are on the fringe of the U.S. team there's really only going to be one pick.

"Keegan Bradley is the obvious one. He's won two tournaments this year, one of them being a major, and he hasn't made the team, which is astonishing really that you can do that in a year and not make the team.

"I'm not going to stand up and say Tiger is a horrible pick, but I'm going to say it's very disappointing that Keegan Bradley doesn't get to play. That's where I'm at with it."

Was reading latest GOLF DIGEST (Picture of Dustin Johnson on the cover). Page 39 with a story about Keegan. Mentions that he earned a sports-management degree from St. John's.

He's a lock for Rookie of the Year, IMO

Certainly seriously in the mix for Golfer of the Year along with Luke Donald and Webb Simpson.

Luke winning money title on both tours might be too much to overcome.

In this year of golfing parity it's pretty great what this kid has accomplished and also what a great interview he is. I wish him luck though at his new salary I'm not sure if I'll put him on my fantasy golf team again next year. Great deal this year.
