Keady Remarks

With all due respect to coach Keady, what he did at Purdue is completely irrelevant here. All that is relevant is what he is doing for our program. Maybe someone here can help me understand what exactly that is.

Gene Keady sits on the SJU bench so that Steve Lavin can bask in the light of Keady's success at Purdue. It's the same reason he invited John Wooden to be his best man: Steve Lavin associates himself with greatness so that others will think he is great as well.

For 200k I would guess.

I think that part of the problem is the perception that the fans should miraculously appear because Lavin got here. We had a lot of excitement when Lav arrived and got a shiny new recruiting class but to be honest we got excited when Norm arrived and we got a shiny new recruiting class. SUCCESS is what is going to reestablish this programs fan base. I am a die hard for life. Maybe its part of who I am...hell i still root for the Jets and that's more of a strain on loyalty than anything. For others however, who were not part of our storied past, the coach is going to have to convince them that they need to be invested in the team. I feel like anyone coming in here should acknowledge the laurels that surround the past history of the program but recognize that those laurels do NOT have any bearing on his success. They are something that he can add to but he will only accomplish this by winning. We have no national title. We have very few final fours. However, we do have a history of winning. We have a history of making runs in the playoffs. We have a history of nail biting, tough games against the best the nation has to offer. Nothing like that stands out in the Lavin era. When Keady and Lavin re-establish us as a CONSISTENT threat, even if we don't win them all, then I will say they are on the right track. For now its all wishful thinking. I will continue to wish for the best for the Redmen, but if this coaching staff wants new fans to be as loyal and as rabid a fan as I am then they better get to stepping on making us a team others worry about...a team that on any given night could give Duke or Arizona or Kentucky a scare or a loss. Right now, as Michael Pointer of the Indystar said, St. John's under Lavin has been nothing but a tease.

THAT is a great post, very well said.

INVITED but only for publicity since he canceled his L.A. venue and flew off to his favorite recruiting place Italy leaving the old coach behind. To this day he takes Mary back for phony recruiting trips at St John's expense.

It's tough coming from a place like Lafayette, Indiana where your school is the only game in town, thus sell outs for every game...

That's why it's rare that big city teams have the successes of their small market counterparts.

I respect Keady, and I realize at 78 he can say whatever he pleases...but unless this team earns its way to the back pages, there will be little interest by the casual fan.

Hey Fun next thing you know , Lavin will try and be your new best friend.

Like Keady, I hate our fans.

Funny...last night there were a few handful of LIU fans that made more noise rooting for thier team than the SJU crowd

I sat next to a bunch of Blackbird fans in Section 10
When the game was over, like the old song goes, I said, "Bye, bye, Blackbird"

Our "fans" were saving it for the message board complaining.

Let's face the facts, our fans sit on their hands. Not enough students bother to go to the games. But then again this is new york, new yorker want winners and we haven't been close for a long long time

And, in the meantime, the atletic department needs to cultivate a new fan base for whom a more cost effective basketball alternative is attractive...no reason we shouldn't be giving the lower bowl end zone tickets away to high schools and elementary schools at $5 a clip (or somethiing like that)

i like the version, Diana Krall sang in "PUBLIC ENEMIES,'" a wonderful and underrated movie about John Dillinger, played by the incomparable, Johnny Depp.. The sultry and sensual Julie London's version is also top notch..
