Keady Remarks

Gene Keady was recently interviewed in the Journal and Courier. He said that he wanted to come back and coach. Here, however is a quote rom that article I found very interesting:

I still want to be a head coach," said Keady, who turned 78 in May. But, the man who retired as Purdue's coach in 2005 after 25 seasons and 512 wins says he wouldn't return for just any job — the situation must be perfect.

"It can't just be a job where you get your brains beat in all the time," Keady said. "I'm working for a great guy right now. Steve Lavin — he's like my son.

"I would be a head coach if I had the chance to recruit good players and the fans were loyal and turned out in big numbers, that sort of thing. Purdue spoiled me. We had great fans."

Who could he be talking about?

No one has caught on yet. This is the master plan for the SJU coaching succession is for Keady to take over and hire Arbitello to his staff.

I kind of see this as a slight to St. John's fans. Having Keady on the bench is an honor for us. Louie in the stands and Keady on the bench at ever game...those are college basketball treasures that not a lot of programs can claim.

That is the way I took it as well. I know it is silly to complain about lack of support on this site because we all support the team and are emotionally vested. The casual NYC college Basketball fan seems to be waiting for the winning to start, it is the students that need to fuel this..

I have a lot of respect for Coach Keady. He had a great career and seems like a decent guy. That said, as a SJUBB fan, what he didn't say makes you feel like chopped liver.

Like Keady, I hate our fans.

Funny...last night there were a few handful of LIU fans that made more noise rooting for thier team than the SJU crowd

Coach Keady had a storied career for which he should be proud.

The aforementioned being said, lets not rewrite history about Coach Keady's final 5 years at Purdue when his team recorded an overall losing record of 73 wins and 79 losses and a pitiful Big Ten record of 31 wins and 49 losses.

Had Coach Keady been considered to be marketable when he "retired" at Purdue then I believe he would have been sought out by other schools after he left Purdue at age age 69 rather than now at age 78.

Well said!

You are a very skilled poster.

Our "fans" were saving it for the message board complaining.

Some of the fans that complain on here are the only remaining diehards and make a lot of noise at the games.

With all due respect to coach Keady, what he did at Purdue is completely irrelevant here. All that is relevant is what he is doing for our program. Maybe someone here can help me understand what exactly that is.

Gene Keady sits on the SJU bench so that Steve Lavin can bask in the light of Keady's success at Purdue. It's the same reason he invited John Wooden to be his best man: Steve Lavin associates himself with greatness so that others will think he is great as well.

Name some schools who have struggled as much as us in the past 20 years that have good fans?

I really can't think of many, if any.

I think that part of the problem is the perception that the fans should miraculously appear because Lavin got here. We had a lot of excitement when Lav arrived and got a shiny new recruiting class but to be honest we got excited when Norm arrived and we got a shiny new recruiting class. SUCCESS is what is going to reestablish this programs fan base. I am a die hard for life. Maybe its part of who I am...hell i still root for the Jets and that's more of a strain on loyalty than anything. For others however, who were not part of our storied past, the coach is going to have to convince them that they need to be invested in the team. I feel like anyone coming in here should acknowledge the laurels that surround the past history of the program but recognize that those laurels do NOT have any bearing on his success. They are something that he can add to but he will only accomplish this by winning. We have no national title. We have very few final fours. However, we do have a history of winning. We have a history of making runs in the playoffs. We have a history of nail biting, tough games against the best the nation has to offer. Nothing like that stands out in the Lavin era. When Keady and Lavin re-establish us as a CONSISTENT threat, even if we don't win them all, then I will say they are on the right track. For now its all wishful thinking. I will continue to wish for the best for the Redmen, but if this coaching staff wants new fans to be as loyal and as rabid a fan as I am then they better get to stepping on making us a team others worry about...a team that on any given night could give Duke or Arizona or Kentucky a scare or a loss. Right now, as Michael Pointer of the Indystar said, St. John's under Lavin has been nothing but a tease.
