So what's everyone's thoughts on Jordan being gone?

I personally think this is a huge blow for the program...not just for this year, but for years to follow.

Jordan had too many issues off the court, n never became a leader the johnnys needed
at pt guard which is the QB especially in college hoops
A really good coach would have demanded more maturity especially goin to class
Lavin pampered him showing me that Lavin was weak in his own standards to succed
The Lavin era was mediocrity at best Glad the new pres wants a winner

I wish Jordan well

hope the up in Smoke Center OB grows up asap
God Bless the Mullin era ;)

Jordan was never asked to be the leader, and never needed to be. Last year he was on a senior heavy roster. He was not going to be the leader of the team over DLo, Pointer, or even Phil.

And while he is certainly to blame for his off the court issues, I also hold everyone else in the program somewhat accountable. You have to believe that the entire staff, as well as the other players, knew he wasn't going to class and whatnot, especially when he goes home to Philly for 2 weeks mid-season. Why isn't DLo or Dom or an assistant coach pulling him aside and being like, "hey man, you are screwing yourself and the team over....you really need to get to class."

As far as Lavin pampering him, I couldn't disagree more. I think the issue was actually the complete opposite. I don't think that Lavin gave him any special treatment, and that really upset Jordan. He was used to being the man and having everyone tell him how great he was, but when he came here, he was treated as just another player. That is why he went back home so much....because there he was treated like a king. He wasn't getting that same attention in college.

Any hoops coach will tell u the Point Guard is his 'Floor Leader' or General'
it comes w the the position n running different offensive plays etc.
Joran was shielded away from interviews by Lavin for 2 yrs thats pampering in my book
Any div 1 BB player needs to be able to meet the press n talk basketball by sophmore yr
As far as his friends death n family illness my heart n prayers go to them all GOD bless but not attending classes on a scholarship shows how much he cared about learning n maturing.
its a sad fact most people dont appreciate something free until they have to pay 4 it later

Being a floor general and being a team leader are, in my opinion, are two completely different things. They can be the same person, but don't necessarily have to be. You are right, the floor general is the one calling the offensive plays and whatnot, but the team leader is more than that. The team leader is the one you go to during time outs, the player that makes the pre-game and post-game speeches. The player that sets an example both on and off the court. No one last year was going to take that role away from DLo. And look at a team like Wisconsin....they were led and Kaminsky and Dekker, neither of which were PG's. You could maybe even say the same about Duke or Kentucky. Duke's starting PG was Cook, and Kentucky had the Harrisons...but I wouldn't call any of them the leaders of their teams.

As far as the pampering....so maybe he was pampered a little bit. But some kids just need to be, and I am ok with that. As a coach, or any authoritative figure for that matter, you need to be able to adjust to different personalities, and be able to present the same idea/information in multiple different ways. For example, say both DLo and Pointer both make a dumb play. With DLo, you can scream and yell at him all day, and he will use that as motivation to play better....but if you take that same screaming approach with Pointer, he gets even more down on himself and plays worse. So you have to be able to adjust when the situation calls for me. Everyone responds to things differently, and a coach needs to understand how his players will respond. Perhaps Lavin believed that pampering Jordan was the best way to handle him.

explain why this will be a huge blow 4 yrs to come ?????

Jordan had personal issues from day one. You can't blame a kid for leaving and hopefully trying to start over either here or overseas. This is not a big blow for the program. It was a mutual decision and life goes on for SJU basketball.

Good Night and Good Luck

Jordan gives us the best chance to win, plain and simple. And what if the most effective recruiting tool out there? Winning! With or without Jordan, I think we all can agree that expectations for this upcoming season were not all that great. But Jordan would have made us competitive. Now we could potentially be looking at 2-3 losing seasons in a row, and that will not help with recruiting. It was going to be a rebuilding project regardless, but losing Jordan just makes it that much more difficult. Kids want to play for a program that wins.

Also, having Jordan would have been a great benefit to Mullin. Remember, while I think Mullin will do great things here, he is also a coach that has zero experience. It would have been nice for him to have a reliable veteran PG (with experience) to fall back on and have lead this team. Instead, he has a roster that has very little experience and playing time, which will make Mullin's job all that much more difficult.

Relying on Jordan to be a leader would have been a big mistake. Talented as he is he does not pump this team up to play at a higher level.

I'm not so sure that he wouldn't have been a leader. He led his team in high school, and was very vocal/emotional. He was never like that at SJU because he didn't have to be....

in my opinion Jumbo you Overate Jordan greatly n Underate Mullins IQ to teach college kids how to play the game right .
You are underestmating a great player known for his ESP on the court by pros such as Magic N Bird . Coach Mullin will succeed his teams wiil be Winners just like him!
They will shoot well pass well pay hard defense n be in great condition plus attend class
cant wait to see the new Johnnys

I don't think you can overrate the best player on the team. I wasn't suggesting that he was going to be an all-american or anything like that....just that we would be alot better off with him rather than without him. I agree with what you are saying about Mullin....but he isn't going to be the one playing. You can have all the knowledge in the world, but you must also be able to transfer that knowledge in a way that others will understand. I'm not saying that Mullin can't do that, he just has to prove that he can.

Agreed n Neither did Lavin pump them up especially in march post season
maybe Lavin should have taken a5hr energy n passed each player a bottle too
