Jon Rothstein: St John's Ready To make A Move

Does 20 wins get us in? We certainly need a signature win against either Creighton or Villanova. Marquette and Providence aren't going to cut it.
I don't think so. I think 22 does it. If we get 22 the NCAA will see a team that has really been surging.

The win total can't be viewed in a vaccum. The Big East is the third ranked conference in the RPI. If St. John's has 20+ wins, they have been on a great streak--another the the committee looks at. Also, and this can't be pushed aside, SJU will have a very solid SOS and RPI if they have 20+ wins.

I think 21 gets us in if one of those wins includes Nova or Creighton.

Agree, beat one of those ranked teams, roll through rest of BE schedule & win two in BE Tourney. Would be nice to knock off Creighton and be playing with house money at Nova, if we run through rest of conference schedule.

That said, this is daunting challenge, which I suspect we won't meet. For me, beating Creighton allows me to gain a little bit more hope & go on to the next one. Shame we are in such a hole, but nothing we can do about that.

It is certainly a daunting task. I have my doubts, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts. They really dug themselves a deep hole. If they would have just taken care of business againt Providene and Depual, they'd be in the driver's seat. The margin of error is small, but it does exist. The posters that think we need to win the BET are very far off IMO.
A win against Creighton would be absolutely huge. A loss would render every regular season game a must-win and probably mandate two wins in the BET.

I think that's the perfect sentiment Marillac, enjoy it while we can. Obviously the odds are against us, but let's see what happens.
This is much more enjoyable than what we were watching just a few weeks ago.

Lets play good down the stretch win the games we are supposed to win, sneak one w vs nova/creighton and see what happens in the Big East Tourny. At the very least playing well now shows some of the recruits that we have a good foundation to build on.

22 wins and we are definitely in. Our SOS, RPI will both be in the 30s and we will be one of the hottest teams in the nation. These are all things they look to for at large bids.

21 wins and we have a shot IMO. Depends who we beat. If it is Nova and/or Creighton, then yes. Again, SOS and RPI play a role.

20 wins and we are on the bubble and at the mercy of those 15 win schools who win their tourney for an automatic bid and have schools in their conference who get at an large bid. More than likely 20 will be NIT.

Let's shoot for 22 wins by Selection Sunday. Of course winning the BET is also not outrageous and would lock it up for sure. Not counting on doing that unless we get a bye.

The key thing is to ensure that we are not seeded 7-10 for the Big East tournament and then have to play a 4th game to win the automatic bid. At 0-5, we were dead last but even with the improved play, if the BET started today, we would be the 8th seed. Luckily, we're playing really well and should have no trouble climbing into the top half of the league by the end of the regular season.

I think 23 gets us in. If we get to 21 and win two in the BET, losing in the final game, we're in. If we are at 20 going in, I think we need to win the whole thing. 22 wins on Selection Sunday would have me really worried.

I see only six more wins prior to the BE tourney and we are still in a deep hole trying to finish 6th to avoid 4 games in the tourney. I still think we need to win the BE tourney for an NCAA bid but at the very worst we will be in post season in the NIT along with 4 other Big East teams. I still think this version of the Big East will send 8 teams to post season since as of today it is ranked the 3rd strongest conference in America and even ahead of the hated ACC.

We need to win Sunday against Creighton. They need to keep the ball away from and out of the hands of McDermott-- Box and one??

I think the other guys on their team shoot to well to play box against them. I think you just face guard him and make it as tough as possible for him. Press and tire him out as much as possible.

I've been guilty of this before, we can't look ahead 40 days and say "well ___ wins puts us in." If the players thought like fans do they'd overlook every game and try to win 6 games a night. We need to look at things situationally. That means Sunday's game, which I believe is a must win in terms of how our outlook improves.

There are countless teams who will move in and out of the discussion from now till mid-March. A lot of parity out there. Right now we are trending up and the only way to ensure we don't end our chances in early February is to pick up a big win against Creighton.

.... every game for the rest of the regular season is a "must win".

Hopefully St.John's wins its next "must win" on Sunday against Creighton.

Absolutely right. We need to take it one game at a time and Win that game. Who cares about the game after.

kinda like StJohns is now in a single elimination regular season tournament.

Finally starting to feel good vibes from this team. I think if we can win 5 out of 8 and beat either creighton or nova we will be in good shape. Bubble at least. Then The Big East Tourney would be huge! If we get to 20 wins I think we should be good. We have shown the ability to play with top teams, that may help, but we need wins.

It's close, but they could still lose one game for sure.

True but this one tomorrow, I feel is a must win. Not too many more resume builders on the schedule. Beating #12 is huge

5 of 8????
Not a chance. The margin for error is 1 game thats it. Anything more than that and your on the outside looking in and need to win the BE Tournament.

I agree. The lack of a marquee win is very troubling for a team that has nearly every metric working in their favor.

I agree with that. I looked at the CBS analysis and it is what really separates us from Georgetown. A win over Creighton, Xavier and Georgetown will start us in the right direction.

We had the Creighton game won until the ref blew the charge call on Jordon in the last minute of the game- that would have been a three point play. When he called what was a block a charge, it left the game tied and the ball in their hands. C'est la vie

Getting ourselves in a big hole that game did not help either. Agree officiating at end sucked.
