Jon Rothstein: St John's Ready To make A Move

I think we are a month too late. Unless we win the Big East Tournament we are not making the NCAA.

Yep, we might as well pack it in. Glad you told me. I could save a few bucks on travel.

I do hope I am wrong but the harsh realities of life are sometimes not easy to accept!

Harsh realities of life? Stop with the banalities, please.

This is college sports. If life's harshest realities were just realted to the success of what team you root for, life would in no way be harsh.

Reality is the season isn't over and games to be played. Fact.

The book on this season hasn't been written just yet.

Does 20 wins get us in? We certainly need a signature win against either Creighton or Villanova. Marquette and Providence aren't going to cut it.

I think 23 gets us in. If we get to 21 and win two in the BET, losing in the final game, we're in. If we are at 20 going in, I think we need to win the whole thing. 22 wins on Selection Sunday would have me really worried.

I don't think so. I think 22 does it. If we get 22 the NCAA will see a team that has really been surging.

Forget Rothstein, His Holiness Papa Francesa, just acknowledged how well St. John's is playing and that Sunday night was a big game against Creighton. Minko chimed in and now Papa Francesa is an expert on the team. Minko was so specific about what's changed (Obekpa and Jordan) and Mike just spoke in platitudes.

I agree Simply. I see three roads to getting into the tournament

1) Win out the rest of the regular season.. that's 22wins, win 1 in the BE tournament. We're in

2) 7-1 the rest of the way.. that's 21wins, win 2 in the BE tournament. We're in.

3) Any less than 7-1 and we have to win the BE tournament.

Either way, we need to really start clicking... because there will be times when simply bad luck (a sprained ankle, bad calls, foul trouble, bad bounces etc) prevents even very good teams from going on long winning streaks.

Precisely. The most likely route to 22 wins is 6-2 the rest of the regular season and 2 wins in the BET. That would have us at 13-4 over the course of our last 17 games.

Buzz matters. We've won 5 of 6 and articles are popping up. That will be nothing compared to the chatter that will take place if we go on the kind of run we are talking about. We'll be viewed as one of the hotter teams in the country, which will give us an advantage over teams with the same/similar amount of wins who are also on or near the bubble.

If we get to 22 I'm pretty confident we'll get in. Getting there is going to be the tough part.

This is one of the dumbest posts I've ever read. If we won out (#6 Villanova on the Road, #12 Creighton, Gtown, Xavier, etc) and two games in the BET, we'd be a top 25 school, we'd have a top 25 RPI, and we'd be looking at a 5 seed. ESPN already has us #49 and first team out in the BPI.

The win total can't be viewed in a vaccum. The Big East is the third ranked conference in the RPI. If St. John's has 20+ wins, they have been on a great streak--another the the committee looks at. Also, and this can't be pushed aside, SJU will have a very solid SOS and RPI if they have 20+ wins.

I think 21 gets us in if one of those wins includes Nova or Creighton.

Agree, beat one of those ranked teams, roll through rest of BE schedule & win two in BE Tourney. Would be nice to knock off Creighton and be playing with house money at Nova, if we run through rest of conference schedule.

That said, this is daunting challenge, which I suspect we won't meet. For me, beating Creighton allows me to gain a little bit more hope & go on to the next one. Shame we are in such a hole, but nothing we can do about that.

I agree with the buzz matters point. I know ppl don't give a crap about what Francesa says, but he spoke about the team earlier and even took a few STJ calls. When STJ beats Creighton Sunday night that will be back page news!

First things first. Beat Creighton. Next, get to .500 in the league. Finish with a winning BE record and a game or 2 in BE

More importantly, we are still a work in progress. Last night Providence had 12 3's for 36 points. WE had 5. That's a big differential, either way.The 3 got them back in the game quick.

I'm not unhappy with our 5 3's but, against quality teams, Creighton for instance, we cannot give them 30 points from 3 land. Do the math.

Our defense , especially when the offense stalls has to step up and shut the 3 off from opponents. We didn't do it last nite and fortunately had the big lead to withstand the PC SURGE.

It isn't likely we'll have such big leads in the remaining games.

Let's first deal with the bluejays and get that first ranked team win under our belt.

It is certainly a daunting task. I have my doubts, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts. They really dug themselves a deep hole. If they would have just taken care of business againt Providene and Depual, they'd be in the driver's seat. The margin of error is small, but it does exist. The posters that think we need to win the BET are very far off IMO.
A win against Creighton would be absolutely huge. A loss would render every regular season game a must-win and probably mandate two wins in the BET.
