Joel - Bright Spot

The one bright spot on this team is Soriano. He was passing like Sabonis and he was a monster in the paint and even hit a couple of J's.

I thought that he was dominating due to lack of real centers but color me surprised. The kid put in the work and it has paid off in spades. Definitely looking like first-team All BE player. Acting like a leader on the court and I can only hope he keeps this rolling.

Agree. And what makes it so frustrating is that we finally get a big man like Soriano, and everyone else around him is mediocre at best. But kudos to Joel for how hard he plays every game.

He was great in the first half. Second half left a lot to be desired. He fumbled the ball away countless times. And he only scored 2 points. Tale of two halves. Hopefully he can put together a full game going forward.

His numbers this season are gonna lead to some big time schools trying to poach him after the season.

Question - I am unfamiliar with the new transfer rules. Would Soriano have to sit out a year if he transferred from here, because he already transferred once? Or do you basically just get free reign to continually transfer places and play immediately?

I ask because if he would have to sit out a year if he left, it could help our next coach, whoever it is, re-recruit him and convince him to stay

Edit: realizing now that Joel is a senior? I thought he was a junior eligibility wise. nevermind i guess

I feel bad for him especially the seton hall game. Felt like he was the only player who put in any effort.

He has another year of eligibility. Would hve to get waiver to play immediately somewhere else a second time. But those seem rather routine now a days. Especially with a coaching change..

I didn’t see the game but I’m gonna go on a limb and guess that Marquette’s focus in the 2nd half was letting anyone other than Soriano shoot the ball because we mostly can’t. I don’t understand why this guy get nitpicked on this site all the time. If I was an opposing coach my entire focus whenever SJU actually set up a half-court offense would be on Soriano.

He is the best big man that I can re-call over the past 15 years. He has a consistent outside shot as well. Too bad his talent is wasted on this no dancing team. Hope he gets some NBA tryout invites.

It is our bad luck that after all these years of hoping for a good big, the other pieces haven't fit. Would have liked Soriano on Lavin's last tournament team when Obekba "wasn't available"

Chances we get a 5th yr out of him? > or < than 50%?
Depends on how much NIL money they can get him. If Anderson is here I think there’s zero chance. If Pitino is here I think he stays and they find the NIL money. No real information, just my opinion.

If Anderson is here zero chance of finding NIL money, or zero chance he stays? Because Joel loves the staff.

Yea Joel loves the staff, not sure his logic on saying if Anderson is here there's 0% chance. They are the one's that developed him, made him captain, and run their offense through him, he's also very close with Jones and Curbelo. I think a change in staff he's more likely to leave early, because with the new transfer rules a new staff is going to clear house and bring in their own players and their plans may not involve running the offense through Joel. The days of a coaching change and majority of the players staying is over, it's too easy to move around now.

With that said with Joel is going to come down to how the NIL money compares to what he'll be getting offered overseas. I think if it's comparable, most of the team returns, he probably stays, if it's a big gap and/or big changes in roster he probably goes.

My guess is he will decide to strike while the iron is hot and turn pro.

If we don’t have a successful season I think it’s going be very tough to find enough NIL money to give Soriano. You have to get him enough to make him not want to go play overseas
