Joe Lapchick

This could be a fantastic centerpiece for the plaza that used to be a road out in front of CA. St johns loves putting in little areas for sitting outside and studying...this could totally be done that way. Maybe add one of Lou later as well. Like I said before, a brick plaza with the names of the donors over $100 would be fantastic (and something to show your kids). I they didn't want to do that they could use the bricks as the base. I think something visible like that could mount the university a little more then enough for just one statue...

even at just $100 a brick all you would need is 2,000 donors and you could get the 200k needed for both statues.

JSJ i nominate you to run with this...

 + 1 and will donate

Me too.

Maybe if we all direct (restrict) our regular donations towards such a statue and talked it up here it might gain some momentum. In the bigger scheme of things 100k isn't that much to the school and they'd be hard pressed to so no.

why involve Louie in this. You can not compare the two. He has a Court named after him. Lapchick ( as with Michael Jordan) statute only

As far as I can tell, Louie is the only person to have both the arena and court both named for him. Others, including those with multiple national championships, have either the court or the arena in their name. SJU not only ignores Joe Lapchick, but also others in their basketball history, such as Frank McGuire, Buck Freeman and the Wonder Five. They act as if there was no basketball prior to 1965. A rich tradition forfeited by neglect.

Let's not lose momemtum on this. It's a fitting (and long-overdue) tribute to Coach Lapchick and to our program's history, and it shouldn't be put on the back burner.

A small little plaza in front of CA with a statue lined with engraved bricks of contributors is a great idea. Where do we have to donate to I'm in.

it would also be a good spot for the university to do some tailgating parties before the games (non alcoholic :( of course) this could go for both home, and away games they could provide bus transportation from campus to MSG or local away games (Fordham, Seton Hall, Rutgers)

lets start a website, put the money in an escrow account and present to Harrington, I'm sure he will have no problem with it. they added 3 meaningless stupid fountains to the campus, whats a statue and a plaza?

or it could be the senior class gift. I know the 09' class gift is the fire place in the DAC. get someone in student government to add this idea to the list of possible senior class gifts.

Can we somehow get Gus Alfieri involved. He wrote a terrific book on Lapchick, I am sure that he would be interested. Does anyone on here know Gus?

This is a no-brainer.

The Lapchick book was a great read.

Lapchick was a Giant among men for his stand for all African Americans, hearing his son Rich re-tell the chilling stories about the vile things done to them makes your hair stand up.

I would definitely contribute!

This would make me proud of Alma mater!
Coach Smith did some great work on same issue, and that was down there. I have heard people say they did not like him because they did not go for the 4 corners. College hoops has had some rough customers but it's great when thinking about all the solid people of substance that have been connected with the sport. I'm a hoops fan, but look forward to future association the BE is to have with Navy. I know that's off topic, but when you hear about all the crap that's out there, it's nice to hear about good stuff. I hoop they don't get booed when they hit the field at Rutgers.

I will donate $500.00 or more if necessary for a Lapchick statue. Have someone of you lawyers set up an escrow account for that purpose and I will send him a check

I see no reason why there can't be 2 statutes, one of Carnesseca & one of Lapchick (one near Taffner entrance & one near Belson Stadium side). I would contribute financially for this in a heartbeat. If Cincy can have one of the Big O while he is still alive we can do one of Looie.

Cost is a serious matter, and since Looie already has his name on the arena, let's concentrate on having Coach Lapchick's statue at the entrance to it.

.
have mixed emotion about naming a court after a coach.Great coaches can be honored by statue.pictures and memorabilia.displayed hopefully schools.will have great coaches. over the next 100.yrs There is only one court

There is also only one Looie. Despite what older alums may feel about Lapchick, Looie is a homegrown coach, a guy who have been associated with St. John's every year of his adult life. I love the idea of a sttue for Lapchick, and he may have been a finer coach, but Looie is a treasure for SJU. He STILL lights up any room he enters.

Lou spent his entire college head coaching career in Alumni Hall so the naming is appropriate.

Coach Lapchick transcended the game - no slight to Lou. Coach Lapchick was a great coach and a great humanitarian.

When this thread first started I was thinking a of statue of both of them with Coach Lapchick sort of mentoring Lou. Their physical heights would be appropriate -- bad idea -- Coach Lapchick should get a statue and the little park suggestion is a nice touch.
