Joey is impressive physically. He can definitely bang. Don't expect much offensively but that's not what he's on the floor for.
Just to confirm, his only eligibility is for the 2nd semester of this season?
Well said Beast. He surprised me for sure. I think he actually had two blocks. I also liked his enthusiasm. Set picks, play physical against the Stainbrooks of the world, rebound = good investment. What a damned pleasant surprise. It's been years since we had a capable big boy banger. UCLA's big boy (Josh Smith?) manhandled us a few years back, with no one able to contain him physically. Not even close.
Along come Waldow and St. Mary's. Yea, I'd take Obekpa over him in a heartbeat, but it was a difficult task for CO without accumulating fouls, which he did. Game over? Not so quick.
JDR comes in when I was expecting Jones. Waldow tries to back in - JDR doesn't budge. Waldow bangs him jostling for position, JDR bangs back - mountains collide. After a minute or two, you realize they are physically matched evenly - JDR might even be stronger. He didn't look like a guy getting his first season's action. Okay, Waldow continued to score, but it wasn't a debacle.
If I'm not mistaken JDR makes a key block in the first half. Harrison immediately gets in his face - screaming at him, exorting him, welcoming to the battle.
Earned his stripes. He will be useful.
Someone must know - is he done after this year? He's listed as a senior on the St. John's site, and a junior on espn…
That pretty much sums it up. JDR did not look got taking his lone shot. But he held his own defensively. I was worried once BE play comes and the Centers get bigger and more physical we would be in trouble. But Joey looks like a serviceable backup and he has great size. What a damned pleasant surprise.
