Jay Bilas 2013 Big East Power Rankings

Cincy could be really solid, but they have a lot of questions in the frontcourt. They lose several starters there and didn't bring any real studs in their class up front. For Cincy to finish high in the rankings, they must find somebody to step up frontcourt scoring or they'll have a tough time of it. They have great guards, but not enough in this league if the frontcourt doesn't bring enough to the table.

Agree about Cincy but Shaquille Thomas is pretty darn good and he sat out last year.

Forgot about Thomas.

Surprised to be ranked that, even with a lot of unknowns. Also surprised a copywritten story only available to insiders was allowed to be posted in its entirety. Thought that was against site rules.

Bilas basically rated the teams in order of his personal favorite programs in my opinion. Clearly Louisville has the  most talent. Cuse right there as well. After that I like our chances against anyone. Nobody really scares me at all.

11. St. John's Red Storm

The Red Storm are young again, and even though the Big East is going through changes, it is still a league that punishes youth. Moe Harkless and assistant Mike Dunlap were lost to the NBA, but God'sgift Achiuwa, Sir'Dominic Pointer, D'Angelo Harrison and Amir Garrett are talented second-year players. Freshman forward Christopher Obekpa of Centereach, N.Y., has potential, but he too is another young player.

In the "good old days," St. John's could expect these young players to mature together, but who knows how long they'll stick around together.

.

Well, yeah, with the team he just reviewed, and the players he listed, I'd pick us 11th also.

Of course, if we also had last year's pg returning - an 8 pt 3asst 31 minutes a game guy, That'd make a difference. Maybe to 10th?

If we had a top 30 ranked PG transferring in - one Bilas's own network called the best defensive player in high school basketball 2 seasons ago, that'd also make a difference. Another spot up in the rankings?

If we had a 6'9 JC All American being added to the mix - one who can play all 3 frontcourt spots, that'd make a difference too. Is that worth 1 or 2 spots?

If we could possibly add a 6'8 5th year prep All American - a top 30 prospect out of high school, that'd probably jump us a couple spots as well.

Hey, if we could ALSO add some depth - maybe a 6'76'8 PF "beast on the boards" kind of guy, a 6'6 sharpshooter from the wing, a 6'3 freak athelete in the backcourt to bring off the bench - maybe another spot or so?

And of course, we did lose our assistant coach. if ONLY we could have gotten our HEAD coach back from his cancer - that guys proven to be worth a couple spots in the conference rankings all on his own....

Boy - how many spots would all that have moved us up from 11th? Man, if only we could have done that!

OH WAIT - we DID!

I mean, if we had us a core of FIVE guys who played 30 minutes a game and all started at least 20 games for us - one at EACH position on thecourt - and 4 were rising sophs - you know, when most players make the biggest improvements of their careers (know what the 2nd biggest jump in improement is among college players? It's JC transfers from their Jr to senior years: think Hardy and Brownlee and...Gift?)- THAT would have been huge for us.

It's not that hard Moose. Insider articles have that little yellow "i" at the top of the article.

Hard to make a list but off the top of my head but my biased list would be something like this

1 Louisville
2 Syracuse
3 Notre Dame
4 Georgetown
5 Marquette
6 Pitt
7 St Johns
8 Cincinnati
9 Rutgers
10 South Florida
11 Providence
12 DePaul
13 Villanova
14 UCONN
15 Seton Hall

Yeah since I've had ESPN Insider since I was in middle school I pretty much read articles not looking for yellow i's.

*Also no link was posted so I just read the post.

I will go back to edit the original post. I will remove all the fluff except for STJ's paragraph and then post just the # and the team. Or should I maybe only post the odd #'s and make everyone guess the rest :)

I .expected to be somewhere around 10th. I don't think Uconn finishes ahead of us. They have some decent guards but lost a ton in the frontcourt. I just don't see it. I seriously think we can make a run for 5-8th in the conference and the NCAA's with our depth and talent. We are really, really deep this season with talent at all positions. I think by mid-season we'll be looking real dangerous. I also think we have enough experience returning to win a lot of those early season speed bump games as opposed to last year. Let them sleep on us. Makes for better publicity when we surprise people.

.Disappointing Bilas doesn't think to highly of us

There are two reasons he does not think too highly of St. John's :
1. He is an ACC shill.
2. He is jealous of Lavin.

hope we make him eat crow

Yes, he's an ACC shill, but jealous of Lavin? Bilas is very successful, both as a lawyer and an ESPN on-camera guy, and, to the best of my knowledge, has never shown any real interest in coaching, so -- aside from hair -- what's to be jealous about?

That said, if we're going to get into the 8-to-9 range, Sampson has to provide the offensive punch that Mo took with him to the NBA. We have a number of solid defenders, so for me, Sampson's offense is the key to a successful season.

I think it's: Louisville
Syracuse
Georgetown

After these three its wide open in my opinion. We can finish anywhere from 4th to 10th depending on how things go. My guess is if wee gel quickly, with the talent level on this team, we'll be closer to 4th than 10th.

Jealous? Ever see Lav's wife?
But professsional jealousy is my guess. Here we have a former colleague who is transforming a Big East nemesis into a national power and Bilas basically writes him and his new players off while he gives a crippled Uconn props.

BTW, Bilas was a three year assistant coach at Duke and takes part in many clinics nationally which leads me to think he does not spend as many billable hours at the law firm he works for in Charlotte..... Or they would have made him a celebrity associate by now! LOL

I doubt that Mr. Bilas is a worker bee at his law firm. No doubt that Bilas is a meet and greeter and rainmaker.

All the more reason for others to be jealous of him, not vice versa.
