James Gandolfini tribute

Ray's a great guy. His wife is from Middle Village and he's related to a friend of mine through marriage. Had a chance to meet him and chat with him on the set of The Irishman. Couldn't have been nicer.

My sister did a cameo on the show at the end of an episode pushing a shopping cart through a super market and had one line.

I met James while at work at my fathers pizzaria on Amsterdam Ave in Manhattan, when he came in I recognized him from a movie called
8MM. And so he ordered 2 slices and a soda, so I said " Hey were you in 8MM" and he responded yes I was while chuckling. He introduced himself to me and I to him, and he asked me if I could sit down with him to talk, because he said he liked my accent. And so I did, he really was intrigued by my Italian American NY accent, he even mimicked me in a respecfull way. And so he told me that he was starring in a new HBO show called Sapranos, I asked him if it was a Opera, since the name of the show and the area my fathers pizzaria was at, Opera was everywhere. He laughed uncontrollably, almost chocking his mouth filled with pizza. Once he was under control he explained that it was mobster, gangster series. He was such a gentleman, and nice guy, he thanked me for sitting with him, the series started about a week or 2 after my encounter, I watch every episode from1 until the end, one of my top shows ever......God Bless James

Ray Romano is from Forest Hills and went to Molloy for a year or two before going back to public school.   HE frequently had a st. john's t-shirt or sweatshirt on the show.

In the King of Queens, which was spun off of Everybody Loves Raymond, the character Deke (the tall friend of James) went to St. John's for grad school (in character, not real life)

I'm really excited about the prequel movie they are filming "The Many Saints of Newark".  Michael Gandolfini is starring in his dad's Tony Sorpano role as a kid.   David? Chase, who wrote and produced the Sopranos, also wrote the prequel.   Early word is that Michael Gandolfini, new to acting, absolutely nailed it in playing the young Tony Soprano.

A friend of mine told me that Kevin James sometimes goes to weekday mass in Mineola, which is really cool.

The prequel kid of makes me sad.   One of my best friends from St. John's owned a children's bookstore in Connecticut.   We would chat some times 2-3 times per week during the day, sometimes about nothing, sometimes about TV shows, and sometimes just laugh.   When the Sopranos ended, we speculated that they had to make a sequel.  At the time Pauly Walnuts (Sirico) had cancer and along with those who got killed during the last season in a mob war wondered if they could pull it off.   My friend dided unexpectedly 4 years ago, so when i heard the news about the prequel, reminded me of those great chats about nothing.

Fantastic story, which is no doubt true because you captured just about everything anyone has ever said about him.  Thanks for sharing.

I watch almost no TV and knew of his show but had never seen it; anyway, I like stand up and frequently went to comedy clubs with my brother years ago. He highly recommended Romano's stand up special on Netflix and I enjoyed the hell out of it. He really came across as a good guy, glad to hear my impression was solid.

I hope you're right about Michael Gandolfini.
Because anytime I think about nepotism and mob movies, I think Sofia Coppola and Godfather III and wince.

That's always something to worry about.   There are some good youtube videos about Michael.  He had never watched a single episode of the Sopranos before his father had passed away, which is pretty interesting in itself (although I believe he was under 13 at the time.)    If he is that good, it's possible this could become a franchise in itself.

Luigi, that is an absolutely great James Gandolfini story, so thankful for you sharing it here with us.

Beast, like I said, I was a very infrequesnt ELR watcher, but saw a St. John's shirt/sweatshirt and thought he might have gone to SJU/he didn't.

Didn't he wear Queens College stuff more often, a Queens College budyy told me that.

Hearing Kevin James goes to weekday Mass in Mineola blows my mind, I thought he was Jewish.

No wincing on redmen.com.  Sometimes failure is a great teacher about pursuing alternate paths.  Sofia Coppolla supposedly became a fine director.

I believe Nicholas Cage is Coppola's nephew.   He's done pretty well, but I'm not sure how much his uncle helped.

Very mixed reaction to Cage.  Some of his stuff is okay, some it feels like he doesn't have the chops.
