J Cole

I realize I'm one of the few young guys in here, but some of you may be hip hop fans anyway. There is a fairly new artist J Cole who came out a few years ago and he has really become a big mainstream name. Anyway, he is a SJ alumni and graduated magna cum laude if I remember correctly. It's just really cool how he goes to SJ games and shouts out the Red Storm every once in a while. Just thought it was interesting and cool to have one of our own making it so big and still showing love even when he is so huge.

I think many are aware of j Cole. I grew up on hip hop as well, but of the "older" genre ie. Jay Z. In fact not that old, but now JayZ finds it more fashionable to rep UK. Point is, it is good and important to remember where you come from, even when one makes it big.

I'm familiar with J. Cole. I wasn't even aware he attended St. John's. I also remember him performing at the Jordan Classic (at the end of the game) in Charlotte last year (although, I didn't stick around to watch).

I do not listen to many of the new acts of today, as it seems it doesn't take much to "get on" nowadays. There are only a handful of artists that I can listen to today. I can't stomach most of the stuff.

By the way, what do you know about DJ Quik?

j cole is one the few alums that the school has kept in good relations with. this is changing for the better. hopefully as the program gains more attention we will see more celebs at the garden. i remember during the artest years spike lee used to attend games wearing a st. john's jersey. not a big fan of him but a celebrity none the less.

I remember seeing him at the Louisville game last year. Maybe e can do something for midnight madness one of these years and really get the student body going.

Yeah the school kind of turned the tide in the good relations department last year with this particular major celebrity alum

cole lost a bit of his buzz IMO from his mixtape days...i still prefer those joints 2 the ones on his album. songs like "villematic", "cost me alot" "premeditated murder" & "looking for trouble" r the joints u can google & youtube if u want a good feeling for what j. cole offers. he also need 2 stop beefing wit lil' young azz diggy simmons...that one don't even make no sense 2 me. why even waste ur time......

good 2 see he always talks bout the college days & taking adv of nyc being a down south cat when alota local up & coming rappers take being in nyc for granted.

Premeditated murder and looking for trouble are two of my favorites of his. Good call deac. From what i know that stuff with diggy is pretty much all diggy.

I love J Cole...he is refreshing. He really embraced the whole Queens/NYC area and he is now blowing up. He has the ability to really get the SJ brand out there and get the student body out to games. SJ must realize the potential here.

Would love to see Nas rep St. johns considering he is from QB but I'll settle for j cole

Below is a LINK to J Cole's biography which states in part:

"He decided that he had a better chance of getting signed in New York City, so he chose to attend St. John's University on an academic scholarship where he majored in communication and minored in business, graduating magna cum laude."

Life @ St. John's:

Yes...Nas is one of my favorite rappers of all time considering he's from Long Island City...he actually did shout out SJ in one of his songs "From St. John's to wake forest, wait for us...straight ballers, you hearin it first". I really wish guys like J Cole, Nas, etc. would wear SJ hats or jerseys though...that would be very very cool. If SJ starts becoming ranked consistently and starts to go past the first round of the tourney, then I think J Cole would be very supportive.

He's jus like Compton?

LOL I see guinness is familiar with him. Quik is one of the most underrated rappers and producers around. Very talented dude whom many people has slept on.

haha...I wasn't really into the West Coast stuff, but I always remembered that video from "Yo! MTV Raps" for some reason.

Just goes to show the high schoolers you don't have to leave the area to go pro.

I've heard several people from my area say the same when it came to west coast music. But, they tended to listened to Dr. Dre. Many people are more mainstream. Although, surprisingly, I've encountered a handful of folks (in my area) who are very familiar, and fond, of Quik and other west coast artists.

Quik has some west coast feel to his music, but it's his production that really catches you. He's very, musical savvy (plays several different instruments), and you really get an idea when you listen to it.

I have teenagers (man I feel old) so I do know about J. Cole and knew he was an Alum.

Nice shout out to Yo MTV Raps and my boy Ed Lover (co-host) who also attended some St. John's games in the 80's and early 90's.

Nas - N.Y. State of Mind (Live at #VEVOSXSW 2012) - YouTube

And he had the greatest dissing album of all time "Ether" lol Jay-Z knows all about it, so let Jay-Z rep Kentucky.
