It's On Lavin This Year

L
Lawman good post, the concern i have is the front court, The De La Rosa brothers are deemed not ready or fit enough to play at this level, Keith Thomas may not be eligible, and we are left with Amir or Sir Dom playing out of position.

Too many questions again, and built in excuses for Steve (Sanchez graduated Jakarr left for the NBA) etc. I hope they can win but would not be surprised if its another NIT year.

Losing Thomas, which appears likely, we are screwed. Good to support the program, but any notion that Joey & Adonis can fill this void is misplaced. Teams will really take to Obekpa to draw fouls. Your NIT forecast, sans Thomas, is reasonable. Very frustrating, but then again, "We are Saint John's".

"screwed" I think is a bit of a stretch. Ceiling definitely lowered, but potential for an ncaa season is still very much in play.
To each his own. Enjoy that front court.

Couldn't resist could you? :cheer:

Hey Paultzman...I notice you didn't contradict any of what I wrote. Facts are a stubborn thing.

.....If Lavin takes this team to the tournament, and gets the 2015 class we are dreaming of, regardless of a 1st round exit, he's staying.

Underscore "dreaming of".

Yeah I sincerely hope Briscoe, Diallo, and Sampson (sp?) commit to St.John's but the hard fact is that Lavin has successfully recruited just 1 high schooler during the past 18 months.

According to Rivals Lavin offered 15 high schoolers during the 2014 cycle and got just 1 commitment.

This cycle Lavin will have at least 6 scholarships yet as of October 29 deep into the cycle he has zero recruits committed despite the fact that 85%+/- of the top 150 players in the class of 2015 are no longer available.

We are....

...but there's no one better at recruiting walk-ons. Lets give credit where credit is due.

these stats you throw out about 85% of recruits already committed doesn't change the fact that 3 five star recruits are seriously considering us, 2 high ranked JUCOs are as well, along with an overseas guard. Complain all you want about the past recruiting class but it's a waste of time and energy, things as of now look decent even with 0 people committed we will see how it plays out

This is the kind of stuff we read about Norm. He was always in the mix...but he couldn't close. Lavin can close a few to be sure, but in year five many posters are still hoping we eke our way into the ncaa. The Thomas debacle kills all hope of a decent run in the tournamant. Jones? I though he just had knee surgery. Sure he'll be back, but if he's human, he'll be less of a beast in order to protect himself. I was elated when Lavin was hired. Now I'm sick that another season may be down the drain.

Again, at the time, Steve Lavin was the most qualified reasonable candidate for the job. To me, the fact that we have not accomplished what we all wanted to yet says more about how far we could have even gone in the first place, then anything. Not sure we can do much better.

I'm hoping for Briscoe too, but wouldn't you find it a little suspicious if we beat out Kentucky or UCONN for his services? Those schools can have pretty much anyone they want, so I'd have to be wary of the fact that (a). he may have eligibility issues, or (b),]. he may have warts in his game.
That's why I was not jumping up and down for the Big East when Marquette got the kid Ellison. He's probably good, but if he was super great, Kentucky, Duke, Kansas somebody would have gotten him (or Marquette REALLY played it dirty, and if so, it remains to be seen if they will get away with it or not).

Its a sad state of affairs when we've gotten to the point where we automatically assume there must be a problem(grades, behavior, talent, etc) with a kid when he shows an interest in us. Having said that, I'd be thrilled to get any or all of the big 3, potential warts and all.

Or, maybe Ellison's family played at Marquette and Briscoe would rather play his home games nearby? These are not ridiculous possibilities.

Exactly. Time to putt "grassy knoll"conspiracy theories to bed please.

Neither are ridiculous possibilities agreed, but they are the exceptions rather than the rule. For now and likely for good. You need leadership at a non FB non FBS school who can identify the exceptions and go after them hard. BE and other non football schools will always have it tougher and it's hard to be very good, near impossible to be great.

I don't agree; plenty of teams besides the elite have recruited very successfully the last few years Wichita State, VCU(Much of the A-10 and AAC), Butler, Gonzaga, George Mason, Villanova, Xavier, Georgetown and yes Marquette). There was nothing wrong with Barkley or Artest either and things haven't changed that much since then. Winning an NCAA outside the power five will continue to be difficult but making a good run will not at least for now.

Alabama head coach Anthony Grant and some of his players delivered season tickets right to the door of holders. When can any of us expect Lavin to be knocking on any of our doors?
