Isaiah Austin: NBA job offer on table

It's not like they are giving him charity. Looks like full time job comes after he completes his undergraduate degree. Seems like a good kid and he certainly has dealt with a lot of adversity. Personally I think the NBA is doing the right thing but others maybe fell different. Just my opinion

Agree

But what are they offering the seniors who get their degrees, but go undrafted? Sure, his is a sad story, but nowadays it seems like everyone has dealt with hardships before.....

Jason Williams (former Duke player) had his career destroyed by injuries......was the NBA offering him a job?

Senior going undrafted is different from player who would have been drafted but couldnt play due to life threatening illness. Also who is to say tha tthe kid didnt talk to the nba commish about his career aspirations and ask if there was a role he could fulfill in the nba.

As far as Jason Williams isnt he on tv ? So he got a job. DId he go to the nba and was turned down ? The nba and the players association as well as the nba teams hire plenty of former players. Look at Allan Houston with the knicks. There are probably 100's of examples

A guy who ruined his career crashing a motorcycle and Austin is a big difference.

It's called riding out a good story.

As in:

"Yeah we have to suspend Player X five games for that dog fighting thing, but have you heard about our assistant, associate director for youth basketball Isaiah Austin and his incredible journey?"

Sounds like the kid has a rare disorder that is potentially deadly for athletes and he might be able to raise awareness through NBA Cares.

Some people just like to bitch and moan.

Here's a link to the article about the NBA offering Isaiah Austin a job:

Seeing how its the slow time of the year for us as fans, I thought this might give us something else to discuss.

So what are your thoughts on this?

Personally, I don't understand why the NBA is going above and beyond normal responsibilities to help this kid out....

Kid was an excellent player and had legit chance to make it...I think it is great that they are giving him a start...

I'm fine with it and think the nba is doing a good thing. I think Austin is a special case because this a is a dude who found out he was done with basketball literally days before he was going to get drafted and sign a million dollar deal. To have it slip through your fingers like that must be devastating, and I think the nba feels very sorry for him and are trying to help him out the best way they can. I think it's a good thing and I think adam silver has a done great job as commish so far.

Agree as well. Many of the "good" jobs involve being in the right place in the right time. Why should this be any different? Good for him.

Wow simply, we agree on this one. And Jumbo does not exactly come across as very charitable on this one.

But do you think he would have been offered a job had he not been possibly drafted?

Probably not but that is a very good reason to do this as he had a very realistic dream that he was about to realize if not for a dreaded disease taking this away from him so suddenly.

How many jobs are right place right time or because of who you know ? millions if not tens of millions. This is no different

This was like someone getting struck by lighting before the biggest payday of their life. Silver did a good thing, IMO.

A related question: Let's say Austin had no chance of being drafted and hadn't declared in the first place. Would Baylor have been required to honor his scholarship? I hope that's the case with D1 ball. It must happen frequently.

I don't think they'd be required to but I don't see how they wouldn't have.

Definitely not required, but the coach would look like king of the A-holes if he didn't honor the scholarship.

There are some clueless coaches out there though, so maybe it has happened. Probably pre-Internet, though, as the bad press would be overwhelming these days.

The school would probably give him a non athletic scholarship to free up the ride for another player.
