I can't remember what I ate last night but I'm sure that fits my belief profile. If you were a Chris Mullin, the player fan, this was the job I would not recommend for him. Most objective fans would have agreed with that 4 years ago. He would have to be better than the previous choices and exceed their very average records to survive. At St. John's that's was a very ambitious task. Certainly not with a staff more I experienced than the head coach. In the end we just couldn't attract the players needed to succeed in the current system. Much of that falls on our recruiting approach and lack of retention of players. It's very hard to integrate new players every year who had little in common prior to St. John's.

Clyde gave up after 2 seasons. He said at the time, that it was so he could spend time with his family, but in the years since, he has indicated that he realized what a cesspool the college recruiting game was, and left because he did not want to be a part of it (and felt that Houston, at the time, couldn't win any other way).

I'd say they are equal. Both hirings got the fan bases revved up -- especially the older guys -- but both ultimately failed.

Sampson proving him right

Really don't think it's even fair to compare. Drexler was 19-39 in two seasons. The two seasons after he left there were losing seasons also.

While I don't think Mullin is a great coach and wish he wasn't hired, we certainly have seen some signs of success in his time here which drexler never achieved.

In retrospect, the crucial piece to this whole puzzle was Slice. Ace recruiter with actual D1 head coaching experience. His departure was a blow we couldn’t take.

not even close comparison, if Mullin has failed, the rest of us humans would be right with him, with your comparison.

he is still learning, have not given up on him yet.

Mullin is no longer a new coach IMHO. I think his quality as a coach is what it is. My concern is whether he can learn and improve going forward. Adjustability?
Player development? Which of our veterans have improved under Mullin?

Still learning? Are we still using that excuse? IMO, it was always a hollow excuse to begin with.

Maybe he would have turned it around on the recruiting front. But, his prior head coaching experience was lackluster and Norm-sequel at best.

Have spent the last 20 years working with CEOs on turning around their businesses, you would be surprised. Maybe you have turned around a team or enterprise at some point. Ain't easy and it takes time. Not an excuse but an observation, from my experience. Doesn't mean I am right, but not betting on yours either.

It's tough, because he wasn't actually a good coach if you saw his Manhattan teams play. And his recruiting was more longview, but we weren't going to get his targets without early success. Plus I think Panther once mentioned that the coaches in NYC that he was connected with were no longer there.

Still learning? Is that what we should tell recruits......come play for the guy who is still learning.

And, if he is still learning, who is he learning from? Himself?

I am sorry, but going with one recruiter and no experience on staff was Chris' choice. We all said it at the beginning of the season. He made his bed. Now there are no more excuses.

My question for you is how long do we allow coach mullin to “learn” before we hold him accountable for not making the tournament? Because that’s the goal here, to make it to the dance. We all agree Lavin had flaws but even he went 2/5. There’s a good chance we go to bed tomorrow with mullin going 0/4. How long do we wait for him to learn
