Is 40 Minutes of Hell Back?

During Season 1 we caused havoc for 94’ with Rutherford, LJF and Dunn doing a great job of swarming, chasing loose balls and creating turnovers on the press. The past 2 years have been a stuggle defensively both in the press and with 3 point shooting oddly enough with the best defensive player (Posh) that we have had since Pointer, Artest.

We should be able to get back to Anderson’s bread and butter this Fall. Speed, (speed and more speed) to go along with our versatile, added depth to the returning core will be the biggest component to form IMA’s true 40 minutes of hell.

Now with Storr, a healthy Pinzon and Curbelo along Mathis and Wusu to the front of the press line will allow Posh to finally run free and cause targeted havoc. Interested to see what type of speed and hand quickness King has in stretches as well.

Jones, Wusu and Stanley are fully capable defensively themselves and will cause further disruption/double teams when the ball advances near the half court line on presses. The added depth is going to be able to let them switch men interchangeably, guard the post with their strength and fly to open shooters when needed.

Agile Nyiwe, Soriano, Traore and Keita as anchors each have a propensity to block shots. Need Soriano healthy and out of foul trouble.

For a team that everyone already loves to critique as not having any jump shooting here’s to hoping our vaunted defense will create all the offense we need when struggling to hit shots.

Teams like Depaul and Georgetown may play in to our hand and try to stay with us in an uptempo game, but teams like Crieghton, UCONN, Nova(assuming Neptune is the real deal) and PC will not. They'll slow down the game. If we don't develop a solid half court game, and if we don't develop a solid 7 man rotation, my prediction is that we will not finish in the top 4 in the Big East and we will not be dancing come March.

Finish as high as possible but top 4 or no ncaa tourney arent mutually exclusive.

Didn't mean to imply that we would need to finish in the top 4 in order to dance. Just don't see us being considered amongst upper echelon of the conference without a solid half court offense and 7 man rotation. Maybe that means top 5 or 6 depending on strength of conference.

As Monte mentioned, unless this team has a solid half court offense, it will not matter what defense is thrown out there, the team will enjoy minimal success at best. In todays game, 40 minutes of hell is not effective as once was. Today's BE level guards are too skilled and savvy to let that disrupt them. They will turn (as they have these past few seasons) 40 minutes of hell into 40 minutes of the opposing team making layups and uncontested three point baskets. All one needs to do is look at the teams defensive stats to see that. While full court pressure is valuable, coach and staff will have to find a good balance between all out pressure and defensive efficiency or they could be headed for another disappointing season no matter what the talent is. Translation......its great to score 95 as long as your opponent does not score 96 plus.

I think it definitely disrupts freshman guards the first time they see it. Lets grab early wins against all the young Big East opponents that we can, but hopefully have a solid backup plan because 4- and 5-star kids with solid coaching will obviously make adjustments.

SJUs personnel and depth should make this years team the most effective pressure defensive group in the Anderson era. When the opponent is susceptible to pressure Anderson can send out Posh, Curbelo, Pinzon and Jones.

Deflections, steals, blocks, 50/50 balls, and most importantly transition points from turnovers should all be 4 year highs w our talent base. There should be a clear identity.

We will have no problems scoring. It’s all about the D this year. Last years defense was nowhere where SJU needed to be.
I don’t think we’ll have any issue putting up points. Timely baskets when the game slows down is what most are concerned about and what the team will have to prove they are capable of.

We never instituted 40 minutes of hell to begin with so the question is will this team be capable of at least 30 minutes of hellacious defense when it is needed. We will thoroughbreds for a running game but who will replace JC's long ball shooting?

On Rothstein's podcast, Coach did say he thinks we will see a much better defensive effort out of this team and he said the players he has this year are more fit to execute the defense he's looking for. I'm paraphrasing a bit

I think the pressure works at times, even against good teams. And it can decimate teams in certain games, like the game at Seton Hall this year, where Kadary Richmond and their guards/wings were really uncomfortable. But when it doesn't work, the execution in the half court needs to be improved, which was a problem this year. And I'd prefer the pressure take less "chances" that results in breakouts or open 3s. To be fair, it may be even be about "taking less chances" and more about simply executing what is supposed to be done.

Anderson has been a successful coach his whole life playing this way. So it isn't going to change wholesale. But I'm hoping it can be augmented to make up for some of the deficiencies or problems we saw in certain games last year.
