Ridiculous post if you really believe that Matt À has the final decision when according scholarships NIL and player roster and rotations.
 
Trying to recall the early season distress last year, and I think it is pretty similar to this year's early season distress. At this point last year, the biggest concern was Richmond, who seemed to be not what was expected or advertised. It took him maybe a third of the season to become that special player. Early season disappointments this year and last. I have to believe that with a few more games, Sanon and Jackson will show up better than what they've shown thus far. If not, then we would have to be concerned. Those and a few others (defense) are obvious reasons to be concerned, but it is NOT panic time yet.

For now, I am still cautiously optimistic RP and team will figure it out. We have a great frontcourt, and talent in the backcourt. They just have to figure it out. And, they have to defend better overall. I do not expect to have the same kind of year from a record standpoint that we had last yerar. That was magical. But, it is early and should still be a terrific season. Let's hope we get squared away soon, starting today.
 
At the end of the day, we lost this one on the boards. With our strong front court no excuse to get out rebounded 38-36. I thought Heise and Buchanan were their unsung heroes keeping balls alive on the boards and challenging our bigs down the stretch.

Buchanan was unquestionably the difference in the 2nd half. Looked liked a completely different, physical player. Those rebounds he got were the death nail.
 
Just finished watching the game and have not read this entire thread, but, my initial reaction is same old Johnnies. We think they're good and they come up short. That's the last 40 years talking.

Optimistic me says we are close and Rick will have us winning these games by 10 come February.

Which one of me is right? I don't know, but now it's Rick's history vs St. John's history and I'm hopeful and rooting for Rick's.

We’re all disappointed due to the sky high expectations for this team but this is anything but “same old Johnnies”. . .this current edition is nothing like what we have dealt with for the 25 years leading up to RP (except for 1 season under Lavin)… the expectations for this team and last year’s team are eons above any team that we have had since ‘99. -and that’s a good thing. Will we live up to to these expectations? Let’s see. We went 1-2 in Bahama’s and ended up a 2 seed. Houston lost 2 games in Players Era tourney last year and went to the championship game.

Yes, we lost the 3 games against P5 and there are no moral victories but we easily could have won all 3 and we have yet to get anything out of Sanon and Jackson. . .they are too talented for that to persist.

Uconn is on its way to a national championship. Last yr was our chance but we blew it with Arkansas. Im still upset with pulling rj in the last 5 minutes. When u go that far you go with the ones who brought u.

If Matt A receives praise from the posters for the players that SJU gets, why Matt A can not receive critics from the posters for the players that SJU gets?

Of course, but it is way too early to say that these guys (Sanon and Jackson in particular) can't produce and be a part of a winning formula here.
 
The roster is unfortunately flawed. But it's clear we're going to beat a lot of teams with our athletes. The two biggest issues on this team are: 1.) lack of another true point guard. You need a QB and at the college level, PG is the most important positon on the court, period. 2.) Lack of another true big man (6'10+). In the B12, Iowa St is considered to have average size but nothing crazy. And even they kinda took it to us on the boards (even though the stat line says they only won the rebounding battle by 3). If you watched the game they were beating us to loose balls and rebounds when it counted most. We needed to keep Vince or get another true big. In March Madness when the Johnnies get out of Big East play, the teams are a different animal and we've seen that against Bama and yesterday. And then Gonzaga, for example, takes it to a whole different level and took Bama to the woodshed yesterday because they were too big inside for Bama to handle which is saying something. Teams like Florida are as big if not even bigger than the Zags.

So all in all, this team will get better but don't expect a crazy deep run in March. The roster is not built the right way. Missing a few key pieces unfortunately. I still think they finish 14-6, 15-5 in the BE and end up with 20+ wins and a 5 or 6 seed in the big dance but I think most of us on here expected more out of this season.

Yielding second chances by failing to defensively rebound bit us in rear twice v solid teams, Bama and ISU. Learn from it quickly. A short time ago Rick railed about absence of guard rebounding. Between Ian and Joson yesterday they had zero. Not exempting front line guys either at crunch time yesterday. As they say, rebounding is about effort.
