Injecting Buzz Into NYC Area Hoops

First of all we play Syracuse anyway. All relatively local,Why not? Like JSJ I like Iona included also.

Syracuse is here every other year, not every year. Prefer to keep it that way. Screw UConn. Would prefer to see a tournament that's exclusively made up of NYC area teams.

Completely understand the sentiment but for the younger fans (and by younger I mean 40 and younger) - I don't believe that any local NY program other than St. John's even has the potential to move the needle or inject "buzz" into NYC hoops which was what the article suggests.

Those philly rivalries are deep rooted and have been cultivated for years and include three teams with which have made the elite 8 in the 2000s. Ours would would actually include none but we would be nearly 1.

I don't see the benefit to us in a holiday tournament at the garden of local schools. If we lose its national news. If we win its local news. Prefer to bring in bigger programs like was happening in 90s and earlier 2000s. Rotate a local school in and bring in 2 teams from elsewhere. Tournament style. I just feel if buzz is what is desired there is only one way to get it - us winning and then combining that with big time matchups that will pique the casual fans interest. Just my humble opinion.

Edit: PS not suggesting you are 40+. No idea how old you are. Just think the average big St. John's fan under 40 is unlikely to care bout any of the other local schools unless they have a tie to one. The casual nyc non St. John's fan under 40 at least knows of St. John's but us alone may not pique interest for them either. Sad state of affairs but it's how it is at least with the people I know.

Am I 40+ years old? To quote a line from Jackson Browne, "I passed that point long ago." (And the fact that I'm quoting the once-popular Browne confirms that I'm at least 40+. :))

No matter how old you are redken, you've still got to be somebody's baby

For the fun of it, how about an old fashioned Garden triple-header:

Game 1 Rutgers vs Fordham

Game 2 Syracuse vs Iona

Game 3 St. John's vs UConn

Why not limit it to Syracuse vs UConn. Let them fill msg with their charming followers....... and then call in a drone strike.

Nothing will add buzz to NYC Hoops more that a SJU team that is a regular top 10 team. We start to get national attention and mention in all media venues. New Yorkers will get the BUZZ.

Touche' ... but the two of you have just admitted to being part of geezer-dom (where the music memories are among the best!).

the concept of a "big four" is an interesting one and it might work almost as well as it has in Philadelphia in time. At least it will get us all back in the Garden as in the days of NYU vs StJ and Manhattan vs Fordham...all massive sellouts. At one time we even enjoyed triple headers with local teams but that is probably economically out of the question now.
I'm not happy with the idea of SU and Uconn as I would also be if the Big 5 looked to include Pitt and Penn State. It wouldn't work. The Big 5 is neighborhood vs neighborhood; SU and UConn are not in the Hood and while it is good basketball, we should play them in the season.
I go back to the 50's in Philly when those games were in the Palestra and tickets were like super bowl tickets. It was a different time but, even today, those contests sell out and inspire their city.. We had that in the 60's in MSG when NYU was hot and Manhattan and Fordham could hold their own. Remind me to tell you someday of the greatest fight ever at the Garden during a doubleheader between those four schools that had to be broken up by The National Anthem by organist Gladys Gooding. Those were good times.
