I was wrong on Jeter

10 years is the threshold. to be eligible must have played at least 10 years which is why Thurman Munson is ineligible for HOF consideration (not that he would have been elected anyway).

That's incorrect.

Munson first appeared on the ballot in 1981, and received 15.5 percent of the vote. Over the next 10+ years, he never received more than that % of votes cast.

If he is to be enshrined into the HOF, it will be up to the veterans committee to vote him in.

Memory may have betrayed me about Munson but 10 year eligibility rule is correct.

What if a guy hits 630 HRs in that time span, never hitting less than 65 in a season or under .330, then retires to take care of his ailing wife after the ninth season?
Ineligible but those stats would maybe lead to a change in the rules.I would also vote in The Kid Who Batted a Thousand (first book I can remember reading). Was a book about a rookie who walked every time up until his last at bat when he hit a game winning HR. :)

In case of the death of an active player or a player who has been retired for less than five (5) full years,, a candidate who is otherwise eligible shall be eligible in the next regular election held at least six (6) months after the date of death or after the end of the five (5) year period, whichever occurs first. .

This allowed the election of Clemente so soon. It allowed voting on Thurman Munson as well.
