I don’t go to zach for his basketball knowledge. But as far as covering the team he gets you as much access as sju fans could ask for IMO. And on the surface he doesn’t seem unwilling to ask coach a tough question or two.
That aaron wheeler article tho. if you’re gonna write an off season hype article for the sake of building interest and excitement. Be ready to have to hear about it later on. Scored 12 points once in 3 years. That makes zach either gullible or naive. Same as the fans who ate it up.
That's all reasonable. He was a 3 star recruit in the top 150 from Brewster Academy. Relative to who left here are the schools who showed interest in Wheeler out of HS:
- Northwestern, Michigan, Arkansas and Creighton were trying to get Wheeler in for official visits before he committed.
- Offers from Pittsburgh, Providence, Rhode Island, Temple and Seton Hall.
Also, from the Purdue web page (admittedly all you will find is positives on a uni site):
• Has great size, length and athleticism on the wing. Has a lot of tools to be a very good player in the Big Ten Conference.
• Called an "undeniable talent with still untapped potential. He's capable of making plays in the open floor, gets well above the rim with ease, covers the court gracefully and is a consistent threat from the 3-point line". -- New England Recruiting Report.
• "Has tremendous length and quickness and can guard a couple different positions at our level," Brewster head coach Jason Smith said.
• Owns a 7-foot wingspan.
• As a junior was named third-team All-NEPSAC AA, one of the best prep leagues in America.
• Brewster Academy has won four national championships in the last six years.
IMO, it was reasonable to think a change of scenery and more opportunity to play here fueled optimism for him to contribute more than he had a Purdue. It's very hard to figure out the guys who will overachieve (GWIII, Earlington) given an opportunity and those who don't.
