How Many Big East Games Will We Win?

Thought his article was on point assessment  with the current state and how that looks toward future.

Not much different that the preseason positivity based on what was coming out of the program itself at that time.

Zach gets beat up at times,, but this article was more than fair.

I thought the portion of his article dealing with the state of our team was spot on. No set rotation, new players have not performed as expected, team has yet to come together, very poor 3 point défense and very poor rebounding. He hit the nail on the head.

Agree with both you and RMNC. Zach didn't mention anything that any relatively objective SJU fan hasn't noticed. I thought he may have been overly positive about our 2 games prior to Pitt. If anything, I'd say we "stopped the bleeding" in those games.

I don’t go to zach for his basketball knowledge. But as far as covering the team he gets you as much access as sju fans could ask for IMO. And on the surface he doesn’t seem unwilling to ask coach a tough question or two.

That aaron wheeler article tho. if you’re gonna write an off season hype article for the sake of building interest and excitement. Be ready to have to hear about it later on. Scored 12 points once in 3 years. That makes zach either gullible or naive. Same as the fans who ate it up.

That's all reasonable.  He was a 3 star recruit in the top 150 from Brewster Academy.   Relative to who left here are the schools who showed interest in Wheeler out of HS:

- Northwestern, Michigan, Arkansas and Creighton were trying to get Wheeler in for official visits before he committed.
- Offers from Pittsburgh, Providence, Rhode Island, Temple and Seton Hall.

Also, from the Purdue web page (admittedly all you will find is positives on a uni site):

• Has great size, length and athleticism on the wing. Has a lot of tools to be a very good player in the Big Ten Conference.
• Called an "undeniable talent with still untapped potential. He's capable of making plays in the open floor, gets well above the rim with ease, covers the court gracefully and is a consistent threat from the 3-point line". -- New England Recruiting Report.
• "Has tremendous length and quickness and can guard a couple different positions at our level," Brewster head coach Jason Smith said.
• Owns a 7-foot wingspan.
• As a junior was named third-team All-NEPSAC AA, one of the best prep leagues in America.
• Brewster Academy has won four national championships in the last six years.

IMO, it was reasonable to think a change of scenery and more opportunity to play here fueled optimism for him to contribute more than he had a Purdue.   It's very hard to figure out the guys who will overachieve (GWIII, Earlington) given an opportunity and those who don't.

That’s the thing beast, your last point, Wheeler had been givin 3 years of good opportunities. To expect some improvement because of a new system makes sense. He pointed to him as the third most impressive player on the team. He needs to play better for him to make a serious impact. He would need to be a completely different player to be our 3rd best.

Agreed Mase.   I look at basketball, and especially a CMA team, as walking into a very good French restaurant in the middle of meal preparation, or an artist starting a painting or sculpture.   It can look like a mess and a pending disaster until it's finished.   At least the thought of that keeps me positive as we go through growing pains.

Hey, wanted to say publicly I really enjoy your posts and insights and positive nature.   Merry Christmas!

Zach does tend to be a homer as it relates to recruiting.  Having said that, I do enjoy his articles

Thank you Beast, it’s mutual. Merry Christmas to you as well!

Zach was the guy who worked up the fan base by being spoon fed how great all the transfers were by the staff That along with the 2 All Big East players the fans were in a frenzy He even discounted the players that were leaving but now he is changing his tune Funny how that works when you are a neutral party
and this site has influenced the latter. Does Zach ever come up with an original thought? /media/kunena/emoticons/unsure.png/media/kunena/emoticons/ermm.png

Maybe I owe zach an apology. I’m not ready to say Wheeler is our third best player but he’s certainly playing like a big East contributor and better than I expected.

I see us winning 1 or 2 more big east games.  Most of the teams we play are much better then us and the teams like Gtown, Depaul and Butler, we play at their place.  I think this is going to be worse then we can possibly imagine.

You may be right….but you probably said the same thing last year

Three ideas to salvage a sagging St. John’s season

https://nypost.com/2022/01/23/st-jo...medium=SocialFlow&utm_source=NYPSportsTwitter
All 3 things worth a shot, I guess, just not sure how this works. If Wheeler starts and Soriano sits, who do we have down low? Or does he start over Mathis or Wusu? I have no problem with Wusu coming off the bench and give us a shot in the arm.

I don't see Coburn and Smith playing together as they're both defensive liabilities. And who sits more so those  guys can  play more? Wusu? Mathis? We need those guys on D, which brings me to number 3. I still say that we don't have the length and athleticism to press often. So while these are all nice suggestions by Zach, not sure how they get implemented or if they will even help us.
