How important is securing Diallo for Mullin

I think it would be a big big statement. But im not that worried about getting him. Id much rather have Sampson for multiple years than Diallo for one.

He's recruiting guys with length. Diallo just happens to be the best of the bunch.

No way is he a must get IMO.

Mullin needs to put together a team; a complete roster in a short amount of time.

He can do that through 5th year guys and JUCOs.

I feel there are more critical must get players in the 2016 class.

I think it's a must for coach to get this commitment. Diallo = Harkless

It would be great but I wouldn't overstate it. Especially if you are thinking he's a Harkless type 1 and done. That didn't work out too well for us or our former coach.

We could be good next year with him if Sheed and Chris come back and we get a couple other complimentary pieces but it's hardly a must get in my eyes. I really don't think that any one player should generally be considered a must get because that's how you get in trouble. Recruiting is often about time and relationships. It's not common that a new coach sneaks in at the last minute and steals a stud prospect from the big boys. I dont expect to get Diallo and won't hold it against Mullin if we don't.

It's more important to me that we build local relationships that help us get players for an extended period of time over the upcoming years and that we continue to recruit nationally and internationally so that St John's is a destination for elite players who want to go away to school.

I don't think it's critical but if we got Diallo it would send a serious message to the rest of the coaches to watch out and don't fuck with us in our own backyard.

Yeah I cursed. Sorry about that but seeing Duke right now about to play does that to me

It's not that important if the goal is creating a program that is sustainably winning. Diallo would be a great boost but he's also a distraction that actually might set things back from creating a program that is sustainably great. St. Johns should be Wisconsin not Kentucky. It's not in our DNA to be a school of one and dones. I agree with posters sampson, Rysheed and yes even Obekpa could become just the north stars we need to show what coming into the lab with Mullen will get you on the road to the pros.

Much less important if this is the case

@SprungOnSports: After a meeting last week with Chris Mullin, Chris Obekpa will return to #sjubb for his senior season, a source tells @sheridanhoops.

wonder if it helps possibly

I think it is too much to ask for Chris to get Diallo coming in so late in the game, even with Matt A on board. I don't think it is crucial. Mullin is working to build a solid program. There may be a few disappointments along the way, but not getting Diallo won't deter him from achieving that goal. I'm thinking long term & won't lose sleep if we don't have a contending team for NCAA T in year one.

Can't hurt. They would be an amazing frontcourt duo.

In terms of success on the court, he's not as important as other guys like Lee or Sampson (3-4 years). In terms of buzz and making a statement, he's pretty damn important.
We have to keep the buzz and excitement going as long and furiously as possible to get this program over the hump.

I think Diallo is a huge difference maker because he's the PF that can both defend and score that we have been missing. I too won't be surprised if we don't land him this late, especially with all his "handlers" mucking up a process that should be simple, but there are few teams that could take the ball to the hole against Obekpa and Diallo and have it go anywhere but into the stands. In addition, Diallo can actually out the ball in the hoop.

We will survive with or without him, but of course WITH him and we could be playing with the big boys from day 1...

Im starting to think kentucky has the edge with half their team going to the draft ( ironically not their pg )

slice is nice

It is completely unrealistic to expect Mullin to come in at the 11th hour and land a top 10 recruit over the likes of Kentucky and Kansas. On the remote chance we land him, great. Otherwise, I have confidence that Mullin and team will build a sustainable foundation for the future.

Its not unrealistic if we have 2 recruiters who have been recruiting him for a long time. Matt and Slice.

Plus Lavin already sold him for years on the Garden and St.John's. He has been there and knows the program intimately.

It would be huge to get him, but signing Williams and Lee would still work nice up front with Obekpa. Lee might be tough if Maryland wants him, but Williams seems plausible and would allow the staff to not paint themselves into a Diallo corner like Lavin seemed to be doing.

Won't be as dominant on the boards, but Williams could give us some scoring punch up front.
