Horace broadnax and son

Not to be Picky but, Horace Broadnax was one of the Dirtiest Players on a Team filled with Dirty Players! G'town was a much more despised team under JT2, than they are under JT3.

I remember Kevin Williams having a Showdown with Ewing during a Game at the Garden. Kevin didn't back down.

Michael Graham was possibly the worst thug on those teams.

Think you can delete the qualifying "possibly."

Perry McDonald, Horace Broadnax, Gene Smith, Patrick Ewing (elbows) were all dirty but none came anywhere near to being as bad as Graham.

Ralph Dalton, Ewing's backup, worked (at least he did) in the area. He use to come to all of the GTown games at MSG. I don't think I've seen him recently though. I ran into him on vacation one year. He and his family were staying at the same resort I was. I introduced myself and we had a nice long discussion over the rivalry back when he played.

David Russell and Billy Martin use to go at it back in the day. Story goes that during the game in the 82/83 season, (the game Kevin Williams went after Ewing), Russell promised he was going to get him (dunk on him). Martin told him it would be the other way around. Russell prediction was correct and added a 360 dunk near the end of the game.

At that same game there was a real St. John's fan standing under the backboard almost on the playing court, pointing, gesturing, and cursing at Ewing for his thuggish behavior which included a vicious elbow to Chris Mullin's head. Even in football today Ewing would have been called for targeting and booted from the game.

Truly amazing what that team, particularly Ewing, got away with, including the time he swung at Pearl Washington with a closed fist and was allowed to stay in the game.

Heard John Thompson (Ewing's old coach) took the mic from his son at the post game presser after the Creighton come back win and basically cursed out the refs and the BE Commissioner. Stay classy coach.

I recall a game against another BE opponent (can't remember what team) where there was a loose ball that Graham didn't come up,with and Graham took a full fist swing at the opponent who came up with the ball (missed the face but comnected with the shoulder) and was allowed to stay in the game.

I remember another incident where Ewing and Patrick Adams (another punk and dirty player who got away with much because he was 5'9") of BC went for a ball and collided. Adams went to the floor and Ewing went after him only to be held back by a referee and a teammate. While the announcers initial reaction was to go after Ewing, one angle of the replay showed that Ewing appeared to be trying to prevent Adams from falling but Adams took a closed fist swing and connected with Ewings jaw at which point Ewing threw him and went after him.

Sure, you just had to bring up Kevin Fitzpatrick and Terence Mullin, didn't you?

Didn't Kevin Williams once take it to Ewing with some fists?

Didn't Kevin Williams once take it to Ewing with some fists?

They tussled in the 82/83 season at MSG. It was in the 1/2 half of the game under the basket and IIRC Kevin fouled Ewing hard. No fisticuffs, but some wrestling, shoves and tough words. The 6'3" Kevin Williams didn't back down from anyone, including the 7' tall Ewing. It was the turning point of the game as we were behind (less than 10 pts, don't remember exactly how many) and went on a mini-run to take the league and I don't think we trailed again.

We beat them twice that year.

Correct you are 85, what a game, what a season as we finished third in the polls. We won the BE tournament in a great win over BC but lost in the sweet 16 to Georgia in a game where Jeff Allen was injured, Kevin Williams had the flu and Georgia had the game of their lives :(
