Medical decisions involving a person and his/her doctors are private, confidential info and properly so. However, Steve, making his announcement after last season public, brings some questions into play..
He was diagnosed last Fall 2010 in his first season as Coach but, waited until fall 2011 for his surgery? Surely, he postponed treatment last year but, one wonders why he didn't have the surgery done right after March 2011, a full 6 months before he actually did.
Waiting, as he did until this Fall to have the prostate surgery done, would clearly impact his early season coaching, as it has.
Likely, there are several reasons why he waited so long but, i don't recall it being made public as to why he delayed?
At this point, it might be a decision for him to rehab all this season and, not return to the bench? I'm sure he and his doctors will make that decision.
I agree with HOOPS that Steve 's persona is what drives the team and, Dunlap, even as a right hand Assistant, does not project that leadership and charisma.
It's a tough luck situation for Steve, the BB team and the University. Let's hope his recovery speeds on..
I do believe Lavin's mission here at SJU is to build a year in/year out BE contender and to challenge for a NCAA championship eventually. I think that is clearly his objective as well as those who brought him here.
