Rising St. John’s senior will represent the United States alongside other BIG EAST standouts in Peru

SJU press release;

QUEENS, N.Y. (June 17, 2019) – St. John’s rising senior Mustapha Heron has been selected to represent the nation at this summer’s Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, it was announced this afternoon by the BIG EAST and USA Basketball.

Heron, who finished second on the team in scoring during his first season with the Red Storm in 2018-19, will join a group of current and former BIG EAST standouts as the U.S. representatives at the international competition. The team will be led on the sideline by Providence Head Coach Ed Cooley. Seton Hall’s Kevin Willard and Brown’s Mike Martin will serve as his assistants.

This summer will mark the first time that players from a single conference will represent USA Basketball in international competition.

Heron will become the third St. John’s player to make an appearance in the Pan Am Games and the first since reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Chris Mullin helped lead Team USA to a gold medal in 1983 in Caracas, Venezuela. Lloyd “Sonny” Dove anchored the United States to a gold medal in 1967 in Winnipeg.

Ed Cooley as head guy & historically involved with USA Basketball benefits from number of selections obviously. Training will also be at PC’s Ruane Practice Facility.

The roster will be trimmed to 12 from 15 before the Pan Am Games

Xavier and Marquette opted not to send players to the Pan Am Games due to conflicts with foreign trip dates.

What a great honour for Mustafa and St. John’s. Hope he has a great tournament , except against We the NOrth, and annamazing senior season.

5 Providence players and we couldn't get Figgy. Find it a bit strange that one BE coach would work under another BE coach.

Wonder if Figgy is on Dominican team.

Also, Luwane Pipkins is new grad transfer to PC. Well Cooley is clever. Lol

Yeah, I don't know if international hoops is like international soccer but Figgy has played for Dominican teams in past events. Would that tie him to such in the future?

Hope MH makes the cut :)
Nice experience for him!
Exposure for SJU.

Georgetown also taking a trip this year which would explain Duke and Reeves over Akinjo/McClung/LeBlanc for example. Also Kamar Baldwin is recovering from an injury. Surely he would have been one of the first choices for this roster.

I've always respected Cooley and understand a few teams are traveling but a third of the roster is Providence. It's pretty glaring. I'm sure there are reasons why obvious omissions like LJ or Paul Reed aren't included. However if I'm Cooley and I already have 4 guys on a roster I'm putting together why include my own talented freshman who underperformed like Duke over a young up and coming guy who impressed like Zegarowski from Creighton or Bey from Nova? Or why not reward a tough nosed guy like Paul Jorgensen over your own incoming grad transfer like Pipkins? Cooley's not a bad guy and I'm sure when he cuts from 15-12 it'll be a couple of his guys but still...

Couldn't agree more Redken. Tony Jackson was just before my time, but I'd be hard pressed to think of two greater Johnnies that I saw play for 3 or 4 years with SJU.

Museo Del Pisco - culture and booze at one stop.:)[/quote] And politics and thirst for power drama. It sits directly right next to the government Palace. You would have seen the last president PPK resign last year over corruption and lave the palace. Fun times at that bar :)

No, he's played three seasons of college ball.

This rising terminology is some dumb thing that all kids are now putting on resumes. I roll my eyes on every resume I see when hiring interns and I see it. What is a rising senior or junior exactly. How do I know you’re not a floundering senior

Term has been around for a long time and I always took it to mean the time after one year or season ended up until the next school year started. Basically the time from approximately May to September like after a player's sophomore year ended he was a rising junior until the new school year started and he became just a junior. Later it might have signified something to do with rising ability. Today I probably don't know what the heck it means-ah, kids today.

Pfizer coined the phrase " Rising Senior " with Viagra
