Heron Injury Update

Boot probably only first few days, with ice/elevation. Then get back on it quickly from there. We just have to use our depth until he’s back. He’s been very up and down this year and maybe a little time off is good for his head too. Hopefully only a few weeks. We have a winnable game in Albany without him and I’m not sure Arizona would be a game we’d win with him, unless he had an incredible day. Will need GWill and Steere picking up those minutes for now.

The recovery time line can be very unpredictable so we shall see. For those who think they can predict the type or severity of an injury by the initial pain, good luck. Next man (men) up! Starting, I think will be Williams.
I think Dunn will start alongside Rutherford. Anderson plays everyone so it doesn't matter that much.
that was my initial thought, but starting the 2 of them, makes subbing a bit more difficult (rest, secondary team, etc)

i think you still start Ruth with Williams at the 2.

Dunn comes in, to give Ruth a break....
Starting Rutherford and Williams gives us no scoring threat from the backcourt. No matter what, LJ is probably going to be facing some double teaming.
Heron wasn't a scoring threat vs. Wvu and other games, and found a way to win
I would start williams vs. Albany and try to get him going early.
Vs. Arizona you cant start roberts and steere together, maybe Earl?

Just gotta seewho steps up in place of heron vs. Az. Who will shy away from the moment, and who wants it, and saylike tu-pac "all eyes on me"

Just a gut feeling but got a feeling that Dunn is going to step up with his best game.

Injuries are different, but one of Albany's starters just returned after missing seven games with a sprained ankle. Hopefully we get Heron back a lot sooner.

Someone needs to relearn the definition of threat. LOL

Heron is always a threat to score but in a few games he definitely did not convert on that threat. However if you don't think every team focuses first on Heron in their defensive schemes you are wrong. His absence will certainly increase the defensive pressure on every one else, especially LJ.

Yes, but those seven games were over about 3 weeks.
Per release from school, he is being listed Day to Day. Not ruled out for Albany
Day-to-day is great news. It means it’s likely not nearly as serious as we all thought it might be. I’d still sit him for Albany if he’s not 100% because we can win that game without him. Get him back on track.

Agree that if Heron is out for a few games, Dunn and Williams will see increased minutes as they should. Personally would consider starting Caraher over either of them. Realize I may be in the minority here.

Heron was our biggest outside threat. Need another shooter out there for spacing. Dunn is less effective if the defense can sag off guys on the perimeter and clog things up. Caraher hasn't proven to be lights out yet but there appears to be a bit of a gap btwn the Figueroa/Heron/Caraher tier of shooters and the next level (Dunn/Champagnie?) A team without outside shooting threats becomes predictable.

Also, I just like Dunn coming in 5 or 6 minutes into the game. So far has been a good spark plug to keep our energy up.

Honestly, i felt that vs. Wvu they were letting him take outside shots, they knew he was struggling

Yeah, I'm in agreement with this take.

Dunn's Uncle, Coach Ted Gustus has tweeted that he feels his nephew is just now shaking off the rust. Gustus is closely watching Dunn's development at PG. His analysis is on point and quite perceptive.

I expect to see Dunn's role expand as Heron recovers.

Possible for sure and agree who starts is almost of no concern. I just think Dunn is a good tempo changer off the bench and as 1 of the 2 headed PG, a little less change to the general substitution patterns starting Williams.

very helpful Post piece...he is in a boot.
I can appreciate that..I just came out of a boot yesterday after 6 weeks. The diagnose was a challenge for me as initially I could only get a cat scan. The ortho still wanted an MRI but it didn't happen for long winded reasons.
I thought it was a sprain; then they said 2 small tendon tears; then maybe some small bone fractures...but without the MRI..who knew. The result was the same no matter what it was...just keep it elevated and stay n the boot for six weeks and then try to walk a bit more each day without it. I say all this because even if he is out of the boot in two weeks, he may need more time to be at game playing strength, and/or he may need a week or two of PTherapy. which for me..starts Friday. But I'm old, he's young. 6 weeks vs 2. Let's just be happy we have a chance to factor into some Big East games.
Go Marcus.

This is phenomenal news, but I hope, and think, they err on the side of caution. Still a ton of season left and there’s no need to rush him back.

This is Heron's 2nd recent ankle injury. He missed playing in the Team USA, Pan Am Bronze game against LJ Figueroa's Dominican Republic team.
It wasn't a big concern at the time because the season was still three months away. It must of been fairly painful to keep Heron out of a Bronze medal game.

Some athletes are more susceptible to ankle injuries. I had several in my younger years.
Hoping Heron is available for Xavier on Jan 5.

Figueroa finished with 11 points for Dominican Republic. Mustafa Heron (St. John’s), who did not play because he turned an ankle in the Argentina game, is Figueroa’s roommate at St. John’s. Heron was disappointed he could not play but already knew what he was going to do with his medal.
He quipped, “I’m going to hang it on my door so he can see it every day.”

If he’s day to day, there’s a good chance he could even be back for Albany considering it’s an entire week away. All depends on how he feels. Time will tell. No rush to get him back for Albany though.

I'd keep him out until Arizona.

Again, it’s all how he feels with an ankle. It’s not like a knee. More rest didn’t necessarily better if he’s feeling pain free or lacks ankle instability. There won’t be an arbitrary timetable. Day-to-day is accurate in this circumstance, especially if not injured as bad as Initially thought.
