Health Sciences Center

I was at the ceremony and was invited to be one of many who signed the last girder. This building is going to be spectacular, and to my knowledge is the first purely academic building to be erected on campus in 40 years (Bent Hall, home of Tobin Business School was last, preceded by Fromkes Hall, home of St. John's Law.) Watching the last girder to be hoisted into place by crane and secured by construction workers was an emotional experience for me. My father was an iron worker who welded thousands of similar girders into place on some of NYC's iconic buildings and bridges. I realized at that moment how much a St. John's education had done for me, and for almost 200,000 of alums.

Damn 40 years since Bent Hall (now Tobin School of Business) was completed. Man sometimes an history fact makes age smack you across the face.

Very true 85 but I get enough smacks across the face just being a St. John’s fan. Not to mention enough kicks in the ass, kicks to the groin, gut punches, ah you get the picture.

It’s great to see the University commit to putting up a new building for the Health Sciences curriculum .

The new Nursing School and the Physician Assistant and Pharmacy programs , which the University is serious about will attract a high number of excellent students . These are not easy subjects to study and require a high GPA to gain admission . Highly Competitive .

One of my Granddaughters will began her Physician Assistant studies this coming Fall at St John’s . It’s a demanding program . As are all the Health Science studies .

You should be very proud of her acceptance. It's one of the white hot clinical majors at st. John's that are incredibly difficult to get into. The academics are also very challenging. We also have a new PT program and an existing Medical Technologist program that have a low acceptance rate.

I chatted with the director of the PA (physician's assistant) program at this event who told me that for incoming fall 23 class there were 2000 applicants for about 100 seats in the class.

The new Dean, Dr. Anne Lin, is an sju pharmacy grad, who was Dean of College of Pharmacy at two other universities. She is an amazing, incredibly competent, and warm person. I saw her Tuesday night at a dinner and spent a long time chatting. You can follow here
On LinkedIn. Your granddaughter should introduce herself to the Dean.

Big growth field in higher education for sure. Saint Joseph's in Philly got into the healthcare curriculum by taking over another institution. Glad St. John's is expanding into this too. I remember Coburn transferred in so he could start his PA program here.

Wonder if St Johns will ever have a Medical School!

Thanks Beast . We are very proud of her getting Admittance and starting in September .

I will certainly mention your suggestion to meet the Dean , Dr Lin . She may have already done that as she has visited the School a few times as part of the Admittance process .

Also too , the Family has a very close friend who is a Professor in the Pharmacy School at St John ‘s , who can probably take care of the introductions , if not already done .

We have some additional photos from the Beam Signing Ceremony that our Friend attended and signed . Which you did too . Hope you wrote legibly ? 😀.

Thanks again for your nice comments . Obviously I am a Alum of St John’s myself and it makes me doubly proud our grandaughter is attending Alma Mater .

Hopefully a step in that direction. Should add an engineering school as well. Those two additions alone would cause a noticeable rise in school rankings.

Then bring back football and we're ready for B10 membership :p
Yes I always thought it was odd that we never had a School of Engineering!

I remember when I was enrolled in CBA in 1970 I wanted badly to major in Finance but could not because SJU did not offer a major in Finance. I was so perplexed thinking how could you have a College of Business Administration and not offer Finance as a major. I ended up majoring in Management which to this day was a waste of time. I went on to build my own financial services company which was small by todays standards but highly profitable. I went on to get my CLU designation thru the American College which is considered today as the gold standard for financial service professionals, I often feel I learned more from the CLU program than I did from the business school. I believe the Tobin School of Business is a far superior learning environment than I had at CBA but I guess that’s progress!

Interesting . I too, hold the CLU credential from the American College . I graduated from CBA in 1968 and did major in Management as you did .
However , I differ in my belief that I learned a lot about how to manage people in the Work Place from St John ‘s . And , it served me well in my Career as I advanced through the organization .
I understand what you are saying about the CLU program which educates people to be Financial and Insurance advisors in todays World .
I would offer this however , many Students Major in Accounting at St John’s as they do at countless other schools but , they eventually have to pass the CPA exam to advance in that profession .

As I worked for a large Insurance and Financial Services Company , I had to utilize many of the Management Principles I learned in CBA to run a Department as well as manage a large Agency Staff . I think it’s all what we take from what we learned . I obtained the CLU designation to learn the subject matter and fundamentals of the business that I was managing . St John’s didn’t have a School of Insurance and Risk Management back then .

I believe that if I would have majored in Finance my career would have taken me in a different direction! I can’t complain my degree allowed me to rise to the ranks of Vice President with 2 companies, and a Managing Director of Sales with another. It didn’t take me long to realize that the real money was in running your own shop. I am in this crazy business for 49 years now a long time to be doing anything. Nice talking to you Sly.
